Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Morning!

Just got done with chores, which is a muddy mess. We got RAIN last night, and lots of it for us after the months of dryness! I just hope my light sussex that have been looking so gorgeous don't go splashing around in the puddles! I know my youngest Marans are playing in them right now. They really are water hounds!
I don't know if I'll be able to get any decent photos, but I'll try if this cloud cover burns off finally.

haha that would indeed make for a messy time - rain and soccer

Just hoping we'll get plenty of sun to dry things out!

Well decided to go and try and get some pictures of a 2.5 Month old Roo Im going to use. The cards were stacked against me. I bought a new phone so, between him not sitting still, being flighty and a slow camera speed it was tough. I think he is going to be a great bird though you cant get much from these pics. He is going to have a nice frame. He is going to be broad. His comb is looking good. I think its going to be big and straight with 5 points. His eyes look good. Good tail, legs, no white under feathers as of now. The ONLY little thing is he has a HINT of copper in the upper breast.

Well- you know you are a crazy chicken lady if you start having night mares about predators

My sister in law had an attack on her coop two days ago and lost (I think) her 10th bird since spring- that lovely birchen roo (Rocky) I gave her. Very sad..... he was a real nice bird. Of course now I look at my coop set up and want to change everything to prevent attacks on my babies- which we have SO FAR had no successful attacks on yet. Which leads to the night mares.... woke at 6am, dreaming of a red tail hawk swooping into my pen- which has happened before- but never been successful. Regardless..... I feel bad she lost another bird. I offered my blue roo that no one seems to want...... of course she just wants it for flock protection, not breeding- which is perfect for him.

It sounds as though she needs to do a serious evaluation on her situation. Thats a lot of birds to have lost!

She allowed her flock to free range all day long, unsupervised. Needless to say- she was feeding the wildlife. Then she admitted to not closing up the coop at night- which led to something scaling the fence to get into the coop. Since then she has put chicken wire underground around the perimeter of the pen and something over the top of the pen- but the last attack dug down to the wire, chewed through it and got into the coop taking that nice birchen boy. She now is investing in hardware cloth and electrifying the fence.... we'll see how that does....
