Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

That is indeed a misleading description of the SOP. It also says feathers on the middle or inner toe is a DQ which is not the case.

Simz, the 2001 SOP on page 31 under Shanks and Toes say (C) Langshans, Faveroles 1. feathered middle toe, 1/2 - 1 1/2 each. Most of this is never in the breed standard and you have to have a SOP and read the first 40 pages to find. There is a whole section on Faults and DQs.

hopefully you took the time to inform the buyer about the birds faults and they don't show up on this board asking the same questions you did next month,,,,one of the ongoing problems from what I have seen in the year I have followed this thread

My real culls are always culled or if old enough sold to the orientals for food.

Thanks Walt, this will give the folks working with the Birchen something to go by when making up the breeding pens. Nothing nicer than a Birchen with the Dark face.

If they can get them right they will look awesome. It sounds as if the next variety up for he Marans is going to be the cuckoo, but I haven't seen a decent one yet.

Thanks for the reply, I was suspecting a problem....of the ones surviving, he was the best of the roosters I received. I got a lovely looking blue copper marans, until you see his webbed feet :(...... Next time I will ask for pictures.

Well, spend some time on this thread & it might help you out if you choose to continue looking. Sorry you're disappointed in what you've got, there are lots of people out there simply trying to make a buck and not breeding good-quality birds, unfortunately. Of course, this happens in all breeds, but it's devastating when there are so few good ones in a breed that is so new.

What's being referred to hear is a BYC member page. Don't go by a member page, SIMZ. I would go directly to www.marans.org - they are the organization who got the Marans approved, and the SOP is listed on the site.
