Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have been reading a lot about the faults and DQs regarding show quality Marans.
Since I am completely new to chickens, I need help!

He's about 5-6mths old. Would really like to know if it would be worth it taking him to a show or not. lol
All opinions welcome. I need to learn!!!! THANKS!

I also have two blue pullets. Both are supposedly from a line that have the mega dark eggs.

I know she has the twisted comb and some copper in one of her wings. Light feathering on her feet.

This one is younger 4mths old I think? She's a little silly but actually lets me catch her. Her comb is straight so far and she has better leg feathering.

Besides what I mentioned above that's about all I know about these birds!

Any of them worth taking to a show?

Thanks!
Tina

LMAO!!! :gig  :lau

(Very nice to have the relief of a good laugh as I prepare myself and some birds (Silkies and Ameraucanas) for our first show on Saturday. Thank you, Don!! And really VERY glad to hear the appointment went well today. :hugs  )

[SIZE]Barb, wanna wish you good luck on your first show. We had our first show at Sussex in Jersey this past weekend and now I'm hooked! Advice: take pictures of the winners, I only got a few and am now disappointed that I can't look back at pics to see who the winners were in the various categories.

Snowbird: there is a required vaccination for the PA Farm Show, it's for Laryngotracheitis. I'm not registered for he show yet, have a few misgivings about this vacination as I believe it is a live virus, and am concerned how this will impact my flock in the future.

Oh My.... What is happening to this thread?

A whole 12 hours without a SINGLE post...

What happened to all those WEST coast girls that use to party all night loooonnnnng on this thread?

HELLO - Is there life out there in Marans land?

Be very careful with any live vaccination.
The flock needs to be quarantined for a few weeks for the effects of the vaccine to do their job, and NOT be transmittable to anything else.
Also, anything used, needles, bottle, everything, needs to be incinerated. I have a friend that brings this package to the crime lab where she works.
Serious stuff...

Good morning, friends! I've been tied up with some work on the farm so haven't been on for a bit, so I'm once again in catch-up mode.

Anyone giving vaccines - please get a home Sharps container (you can get it at any pharmacy). It's a red plastic jug that you put needles only into. When it's full, take it to your local pharmacy & they'll handle it from there. :)

For sure, this is important information!! Thanks for posting, stoo!

I met them and I survived.........

Good to here things are OK.

K, caught up. Not much going on in here the last couple of days!

Pink, not sure if anyone answered your question on the name we are using for (silver) Birchens, but that color variety has been called "Birchen" for eons, and I'm sure that's probably why we continue to do so. Not that I'm a fan of doing something because it's always been done that way.

Barb - BEST of luck at the show tomorrow! You're not taking any of your Marans?

BOO! Are you taking that black Ameraucana male? Hope so! Can't wait to hear how you do!

ILT vaccine comes in two types. One is Embryo culture and the other is Tissue culture. One produces a carrier and the other does not. You want to make sure you use the Tissue Culture Vaccine.

Ron
Thanks for posting this, Ron - I knew there were two types, but I did not know one results in a carrier status! Good to know.
