March 2017! Hatch with us!

Up to 5 chicks. While the 5th was hatching the others all jumped on it and started pecking (they have been out over 48 hours) so I removed them. Got one that pipped over 36 hours ago so I started assisting. I know I shouldn't have but it just seemed so long. It's not out yet. We will see if it makes it

Sounds like you are making good choices. I really hope your little pipper makes it too!

So sorry about the Bad News items, but the Good News outnumber the bad - so congrats!!!  Good luck with your new box of Biele eggs.  I'm hatching some for a fellow BYC'r, she set half, I set the other half.  Only 2 of hers are developing, and I need a better flashlight to see in the ones I have, but the only ones I know I saw veins in were in her OE eggs.  I'll find out where she got hers - maybe they are from the same place yours were from.

I candled a few of each breed of eggs I have in my bator - day 16.  I ordered 4 BR, 4 SLW and 6 SS from the same ebay vendor.  The sent 6 BR and 6 SLW in one box, and 8 SS in a second box.  The SLW and SS are developing the BR are not.   These eggs all made an unscheduled (extra) trip to Los Angeles, before going to my normal sorting facility, then to my PO.  I have to suspect fertility, not just shipping.  Shipping would have effected all 3 sets.

But what the shipping HAS impacted.  Last month I ordered 12 silkie/sizzle eggs, they sent 18 and 17 developed, 15 hatched.  I ordered another dozen from the same person.  She sent 14 this time.  I only candled 6 eggs, but NONE of the 6 were developing.  The first set I got from her came straight from her PO to my sorting, to my PO.  This set went to her PO, another sorting in her area, to Los Angeles, to my sorting to my PO.  That is 2 extra stops.

Has anyone ever had any luck filing a claim for something like this?

I have yet to file a claim, so sadly no help there. If you get a SS roo, I think I just might know a crazy chicken lady in Redding that might want it.... :gig

OK so I have a bit of dilemma on my hands. With my chicken eggs I just started weighing them on my scales. On day 7 they all averaged out to be at about 6% which is on the high side yet the air sacs seem to be a little small. Should I just keep it at the same or change it and go by looks? Thank you for your help.

I feel your pain. I've been recalibrating everything, but nothing seems amiss. I truly am mystified. So, I will be watching my next hatches like a hawk! (Not the kind that kill chickens, mind... a small hawk.:) )

This next hatch I have shrunk my incubator so I have less open area also I am recalibrating it as well as a 3rd and maybe a 4th mesurment unit so I'll know on all 4 sides what might be happening I'll own on day three to plug in the turner then on day 7 recandle and then on day 18 total lockdown I'm setting the humidity at 35% and at 65 at lockdown then we will see

Still no pips here. Tomorrow is day 28 for the turkeys. I am worrying about this hatch more than any other. I keep thinking their air cells aren't big enough or they're going to pip on the wrong side. And I have nothing much to do tomorrow but stare at them. :p

Well I lost that hatch and have no idea as to what happened it looked like they just stoped developing about the same time thought power outage but I dont remember one! So I'm at a loss I'm recalibrating my incubator and loading it for bear this time with 48 eggs so if those don't hatch I will build me an incubator and see if mine will do better!!
I'm sorry you had such a bad hatch, after the success you had with the old eggs, I thought for sure these would do good. I hope the next batch is good, you are definitely making good choices.

I know my first hatch was a loooooong shot but with my bantam abandoning the nest was a bigger concern than the eggs in the incubator I would have trashed them for the bantam eggs if my incubator was small but I was blessed with 10 healthy bantam chicks! So not a total loss!! I'm ready for this next set know my eggs should be fertile the ones I have opened up have been from the generous 30 eggs from ChickADeeHatch ordered 24 but received 30 18 of mine I know that I have a good chance in this hatch no room for any more eggs plans made OHOHOoooooopooooH ! I did do something different!!! I had a brighter flashlight !!! Wondering now if I didn't zap them in the shell??

For those having tough hatches, I was helping troubleshoot with a local friend that lost several chicks after lockdown. We came up with a few possible (probable) issues, so I thought I'd share.

When everything else seems right, look at the simple stuff.

-Sterilize your incubators between hatches.
-Use rubber shelf liner on the bottom, not towels, paper towels, etc.
-Leave vents open!

:)

That is really unfortunate. I have never hatched turkeys. Have you hatched them before, with any success?
nope, want to start a flock
