March 2017! Hatch with us!

I locked down Saturday - I had originally set them at 10:00 at night, so that was still technically day 18. - I left the house yesterday, nothing going on. Got back this morning to 6 pips!!! One was chirping and trying to zip. My app says it's still day 20 until 10 tonight, so let's hope it will be a busy day today and tomorrow!

My bantams usually hatch before my LF eggs. But surprisingly, the pips are in both - I have 2 bantams (from my chickens), 2 RIIR and 2 I can't see the markings - the drawdown was on the wrong side. They are either Speckled Sussex or Silver Laced Wyandotte. Other than my eggs, these are all EBAY purchases. We'll see how they do!

Plus, I checked on my broody pile and I've seen 2 shells, but only 1 chick popping it's head up out of the pile. I can hear more chirping though!!.

Let's go chickies!!!

Oh my goodness, I saw a vicious sight this morning! Back up first... Checked on my broody yesterday, only one chick had hatched. She was off the nest with the new baby... EATING... all the other eggs just laying there!! I noticed pips in one or two, but closed the lid on the nest box real quick because I didn't want the breeze blowing in.

This morning I go out to check on her, I hear several peeping. Felt around her rear, could feel at least 3. Then I see a wet head pop out from under her chest, it was still half in the egg. She pecked it so hard, I thought she was trying to kill it! Again, I closed the lid quickly. I hope its still alive when I get home today, but apparently she knows what she is doing.

That is an AWESOME photo!!! What a good Momma!!

My broody pile, I had to open the door, since a nasty EE that grew up with the silkies (and doesn't want to leave), had snuck in somehow and was attacking the broody moms. I grabbed her, then I sort of peeked in between a couple of the broodies and I saw a BEAUTIFUL, TINY little chick. I heard another chick further over. This one was hanging out, wedge in between 2 hens. This is going to be interesting, I hope these chicks make it.

Okay, all my talk about "Can't do bantams because of hawks" just flew right out the window. I just bought some of TJchickens d'Uccle eggs. Darn their cute little faces - they worked like kryptonite on my will power!!! :idunno
