Hi,

I do hatch in cartons with good success. I have 4 eggs due to hatch tomorrow (I'm doing staggered hatches) and for an experiment I've laid them down this time. I did put them in the egg carton lid with the non slip rubber shelving sort of crinkled to help keep them from being rolled around by the other chicks.

I was surprised this morning to see a pip!

I always have one early bird and it usually turns out to be a rooster!

well all im a little sad now i went to help my ducklings that had stalled during zipping and i was too late they both had already passed. so i went ahead and opened the other duck eggs and all those had died as well

4 had internally pipped all were fully formed and had absorbed the yolk so not too sure what happened but

.
so i cleaned the incubator and went ahead and set the eggs i had received in the mail yesterday so on a happier note i have 6 ee's and 15 silkie eggs now on day 1

Day 21 and still nothing

I am worried that my few viable eggs didn't make it.

There are only 7 eggs left under my broody WLH hen:

1 egg on day 21 (the WLH's egg which was growing and alive at the last candling a few days ago)
2 eggs on day 20 (bantie eggs which were growing and alive at the last candling a few days ago)
4 eggs on days 19-21 (dark brown sex-link, were unable to candle these - may not be fertile at all)

I went ahead and bought 4 young bantie chicks yesterday while at the store since they were the breeds I wanted and actually in stock. They are now in a brooder in my bathroom. I was hoping for a pip and zip by today so I could get these new babies under the hen tonight.

Any way to check the eggs this late in the game? Should I do a warm water float on the brown eggs at least?

So frustrated! I really wanted some of our own offspring to hatch.

YOU- KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF THAT BATOR... and good luck with your hatch... I'm getting close, the 11th.

Did you read my post? I CAN'T keep my hands off the bator or I'll have cooked eggs!

Have I missed your post....how's it going....?

I'd wait a few more days before going into defeat mode....
good hatching vibes being sent.

Momma hen is free ranging again, after 4 weeks on the nest! The babies are following her, and the dog (our airedale, a big softy) is following them. She is eating, teaching the babies to eat and drink, and having some well-deserved exercise! She returns to the crate every few hours though for sleeping...
