We are in on the hatch-along. We are setting 30 +/- on Thursday March 6. We have only mixes this time around. Our BLR Roo had an injury to his hip or leg that he did not recover from. We had to put him down last Fall. We are using two of his sons, BLR x Plymouth Barred Rock and BLR x Amber star.

Looking forward to seeing everyone's progress.

Beautiful BLR...Do you have the parents? or did you mail order the eggs?
the chicks in these photos are from chicken hill... her website is chickenhillpoultry.com :)

Thanks for the offer, I would need to get rid of my other two or add more hens...now there is an option. LOL, wife would probably not go for that. Great line of BLR, we really enjoyed having him. I am going to have to pass on one of them.

My first hatch was a total loss. Pretty bummed. Low fertility due to really cold weather. Had an "incident" where a house guest unplugged the 'bator and the air temp on top the eggs dropped to 65 before I found it and plugged it back in (shell temp on the eggs dropped to like 77 by the infrared thermometer I have). That killed probably another half or caused them to quit early (eggtopsy showed they quit at about 9-10 days development). Going into lockdown, there were 3 that looked nearly fully developed, two of which were moving around a lot and had heavy veining. Candled this evening after no pips today (this should have been hatch day). Found no movement and veining was no longer present. Did eggtopsy to find the three were basically fully developed - died right around lockdown. I had a weird temp issue right after lockdown and I think this might have caused the failure. Getting the 'bator sanitized and relocated for a reset. Here's crossing fingers for better results this time around.

Had one of my Feb. hatch eggs made it out after we brought them in Sunday and hung them over the wood stove. Today I thought I heard peeping, then later John heard it also and stronger. Sure enough he looked and it was pipping out, first time we got to watch.

. After the poor little thing got dried out and warmed up we put it with the one that hatched on Saturday and the bigger chicks. They all took it right in the nest and settled right in. Now I have five left in the basket.

The one under the chick perched on side of pan is newest and one facing this way is the one hatched Saturday. We are addicted when I guess when we sit in the floor and watch the babies along with the little dog watching also.

Hi all!

Just set 20 BCMs and 7 Olive Eggers this morning.

This is my 3rd hatch and 1st with a new and improved "coolerbator".

Didn't have great rates with my first 2 efforts last year - suffered losses due to apparent drowning, so I'm trying the "dry" approach this time.

Will definitely need to candle in a few days as I recently did some roo shuffling so I'm not positive about fertility.

Fingers crossed!
