March Hatch-A-Long

So... I decided to do the candeling since it was dark and close enough. Very doubtful on any of the first group of 27 hatching. They're the ones that looked like the post office drop kicked them. I pulled 7 out for sure clear. Many too dark to be sure and a couple iffy but not one looked good for day almost 9. I decided to candle a few of the white breese though and they look great for day 4. I saw a tiny heart beating. I hope they keep it up. All those air cells looked solid so will start turning them tomorrow.

The Breese have lighter colored egg's so they are easier to see into.

For sure. Half are white and tge rest a dark cream. But they few white I had from the original 28 were non starters. A bunch of them didn't even have clear air cells it's sad

Hopefully this batch of Breese will do better for you.

What does the air cell indicate....not sure I really saw those either on some of my eggs. Some of mine just looked completely empty.

22 go into lockdown today for a Thursday hatch. A bunch of these chicks already spoken for. Then I will have to unplug my incubator until the end of the month for the Easter Hatch-a-long, which will be hard as I'm getting lots of pretty eggs from my workin' girls out back. Being a restricted hatchaholic is HARD. I want to set all the eggs!

I set 41 eggs Friday afternoon. 19 from my flock which is Legbar cock over- Legbar, EE, Marans, OE and BR. I also set 5 Silver Spitzhauben, and 15 BCM. The breeder I got the Marans from said her fertility was really low on them because of the weather.

12 hours after I set the 41 eggs, I found an egg in my chore jacket pocket from a hen that hadn’t laid in 1.5 weeks. I really wanted to set her eggs, but she quit laying, so I popped that in too. Not too hopeful on that one, but you never know!

I candled today at about 65 hours into incubation, and I could already see heartbeats in the spitz eggs!

Hatch day is March 21

What does the air cell indicate....not sure I really saw those either on some of my eggs. Some of mine just looked completely empty.

The air cell grows as the chick does and is based on humidity. If the humidity is too low the air cell can get too big and the chick can get stuck to the shell - too small and the chick can run out of air before it manages to pip externally.

I was more concerned about the age of the egg. It could be as old as 1.5-2 weeks old.
