I'm so sorry you are going through all this!
It is a very hard thing to do. We think, because we would want to live even in a less able capacity, that they would. They are very instinctual. If he cannot do what roosters do, he will be scared and suffering all the time. He crows because he is hiding his condition. I wouldn't personally be able to do it. It would have to be DH doing it here. You're brave to want to be there to help him cross the rainbow bridge.
I also want to add, I tried to keep Ethel alive for a week after an eagle attack. She got continually worse until she died. That is an even worse feeling. I should have culled her days earlier as I saw her declining.
Perhaps the lab will also talk this over with you. Tell them the symptoms. Maybe if you hear it from them, you'll feel better about it.
