Mareks experience needed. prelim results pg 9

Was wondering once you do find Marek on your property, how do you clean up? Will bleaching cages and coops get rid of the marek?

as long as you keep birds that were exposed it will be here as long as they keep getting exposed. Vaccinating all new birds is a must. You can safely sell eggs and chicks as long as you don't handle the chicks after being near your flock, high bio measures etc.

I will research further when I get the results, I should have had them yesterday, she said they were prepping the slides, staining etc... still waiting

OMG !!!! Haven't been on this forum for awhile. Just found UR horrid delema !!! So very sorry to read about all the problems you're having. Such a heartache.
Last yr I had a few young chickens...abt 6 mos that had leg problems. No, not vaccinated. They started to drag a leg and the foot was drawn up into a claw. I hope this isn't the same problem. When I got to where I couldn't take any more I just culled the last one. I already had one little roo in house in cage. I started to do physical therepy on the foot..rubbing the "palm" of it and stretching out the toes. Now U don't even know he ever had a limp. I didn loose about 3 others. Thought he'd die too. This was beginning of Nov. He's still in house with us and is a real pet. Also, he's a blue Silky. I hope this isn't Mereks !!

I am very sorry for all the pain you are going through.

I have been reading your post avidly since I have a hen how seems to have something. I thought it might be Marek's but now I am not sure. If she does have Marek's it doesn't seem to be killing her. She is a Black Ostrolop about 4 years old. She can't walk. Started out I would find her sleeping on the ground at night instead of up on the perches. Then I noticed she was sitting around alot, she could walk but but didn't want to. Then she couldn't walk without falling and the others started pecking her. I isolated her and she isn't getting worse. Can't walk, kicks her legs alot. Eats and drinks with no problem. Lays on her side and pushes her way around her pen. She even layed a couple eggs like that, but that has stopped. Has been like this for about 2 months give or take. Thought she might get better, but she is not getting worse. There is no eye problems, both eyes are clear and she is very alert and perky. She poops normal no vent problems. Haven't had the heart to cull her. I think I am going to try colloidal silver on her. If it is Marek's then it is a virus, and silver kills viruses. I will let you know if there is any hope. I don't like vaccines, they are Moltov cocktails. I prefer natural. None of the rest of the flock has any signs or problems.

I had a hen last year that seemed to develop quick a nerological disorder. Twisted neck acted wierd, very sudden onset. I brought her in tried to feed and water her. Didn't work too well. Had my husband cull her. I think she ate something toxic. Haven't seen anything more like that one.

Has anyone heard of henbane. And what kind of sympoms does it cause?

I had a 10 week old chick last year that suddenly got that twisted neck. I think they call that wry neck. I don't know anything about it. I had culled him right away. I have no idea if it was Marek's.

I had no idea that I was hatching eggs under silkies with my flock, and MY flock would be the ones to infect them. And to add to this, 5 of those chicks were hatched in my incubator, then put out with the other 5 that were hatched by the silkies! I had no idea that my flock had it. Yes, I had some chickens in the past 2 years waste away and die , and didn't realize it was Marek's. And the first roo with paralysis 2 years ago was diagnosed with something else by a non-avian vet.

So, like Krista, I will be vaccinating any chicks that I hatch.

I am just throwing this info out there as I never hear of anyone suggesting that lead poisoning can also cause paralysis in chickens. My neighbor had one have trouble with her neck, it died. Another hen couldn't walk suddenly. She got the paralyzed hen's blood tested and lead poisoning came back as the result.

Please read post #129, you never know. I really believe this is a problem that is more widespread than people realize. Chickens get into all sorts of things and lead paint chips ca be anywhere a chicken pecks. Just saying.
