Mareks in my flock?

Hey guys what do you recommend I should try when one of mine have started losing weight. He shows no other signs yet. This was how my other started though and eventually passed. He is still eating and seems happy enough. He is one of the first chicks I ever hatched though and I don't want to lose him. Any suggestions are welcome.

That's just a freakin' scary, but all too accurate description.

Seminolewind. Where are you finding the Sulfadimethoxine 12.5% at a reasonable price? I'm almost out of Corid. I think I have enough for one round but after that I'll be wanting to switch over to the Sulfadimethoxine to prevent resistance. Can I mix Terramycin with Corid and dose at the same time?

Basically I use herbs as a complimentary treatment in conjunction with modern drugs. I started doing that when I got Lyme Disease and my doctor was into complimentary medicine. I wouldn't think of trying it by itself but along with other treatments I've seen it work wonders. Anything that helps a body fight a disease process is ok IMHO.

Have you looked into Toltrazuril (Baycox) for cocci treatment? Considering they are pets and more aggressive treatment may be needed, it's something I would look into...

I have looked into it but he is still eating with gusto. But even with his appetite he is losing weight.. :( maybe I should try worming him.. Ugh. Hate this disease.

What kind of feed are you giving him? Since he's eating, maybe something with higher protein might help? Ever tried mixing in some Catfish/Trout/Koi pellets?

Have you wormed lately? That might be the place to start, just in case a worm load is contributing to him loosing weight. Maybe add extra protein and fat to his diet?

I just came in from feeding and watering and have a 6 week old pullet showing signs of left leg paralysis. She was limping badly earlier and I thought maybe she had just twisted something flying around but I looked at her and when she walked, her toes weren't working. She sometimes stepped on them with her right foot and would sit down often. When she did she would extend that leg out in front of her as if that was the way she was comfortable. She did manage to get up on a low roost with several other youngsters and I noticed that she is breathing heavily. This looks like the official first signs of it in my bantams. I checked her leg thoroughly. No injury that I could see. No swelling. She has some response when I press on the large pad but her toes just don't want to work.

This youngster was hatched under a broody Welsummer hen.

What wormer did you use and how much did you give? I ask because you mentioned using ivermectin in a previous post, and there are studies that say it's not an effective poultry de-wormer.

X2

Good catch, Kathy... personally I recommend Valbazen(Albendazole 11.6%) or Safeguard(fenbendazole 10%)... we have discovered that gapeworm is abundant here and I have had excellent results treating all my birds with it... thanks to Kathy's help... ;)

I started using Safeguard this year with good results.

Regarding the Baycox. I found it on Ebay but was wondering if it was an RX required wormer as Ebay was the only place I found it for sale.

No, it's not a prescription one, and not a dewormer... it's a coccidistat... try looking it up under the ingredient name, Toltrazuril... is used for horses quite frequently, I've found it on horse supply sites... Kathy can probably give the best links for it, also some is water soluble and some is not... and different strengths... check with Kathy first, before buying... :)

Microchick, I also meant to add, you might want to get Valbazen as well, and switch off between the 2 when you deworm... use one, then next time use the other, then back... *should* help keep the worms from building resistance to one type...
