So I am back again asking a question about my poor chookie, Squeak. Here's some back story on her recent health. About a month ago she had a stool sample that came back positive for coccidiosis. She was treated with coccivet. I've also been giving her oregano oil in water once daily as a natural remedy. She has had little improvement since the coccidiosis. Still lethargic, pale face, floppy comb. She is, however, eating and drinking.

So this afternoon I came out to check on her. One look at her eye, I new something was NOT right. The bottom eyelid was purple as if it were bruising. She has a white lump in her eye. (you had to gently pull the lid down to see it) When I say in, I don't mean on the eyeball its self, it's inside the eye underneath the bottom lid. It is a substantial size when putting it in proportion. She is very irritated (don't blame her!!) and it looks like it's causing her great discomfort:hit. She went to bed early.
As a quick treatment before I could get actual advise I put some antibiotic drops in her eye (chlorsig).

I have also noticed her other eye is very dilated and stuck like that. Her pupil is way too big when she is in a well lit room. Why?

If anyone has had a similar experience or knows any causes and treatments for these I would be soooo grateful! I love this bird so much and want the best for her.:fl

Name: Squeak
Age: 1.5 years
Breed: Unknown
Current Weight: 1.350kg
Healthy Weight:2kg
Lice: treated (Maldison 500)
Worms: treated (killverm)
Medicines: Chlorsig, oregano oil, coccivet.

I am so sorry your chicken is sick!

I'm concerned by your observation about the hens pupil because a form of Mareks disease can sometimes be characterized by abnormalities in the eye.

In addition the the question I posted above ( any new birds? )
Have you lost, or have any birds, becides this one, been ill recently?

I'm attaching this for you to look at. It is an excellent compilation of information.

Hello everyone and thank you for all the help so far.

So to address the questions asked.

Yes, we adopted a pekin about a month ago. It probably wasn't the best time to get her as squeak was still recovering from coccidiosis but she really needed a home. With in an hour of having her, driving home, I noticed a sever respiratory infection. Usual symptoms of gasping, gurgly breathing, sneezing, coughing and not eating. Additionally I noticed she wis riddled with lice. They COVERED her. Her bottom feathers had clusters of unhatched eggs coating her feathers. It was so bad!! She was deloused immediately and I tried my best to pull the clusters of eggs off her feathers. With in i'd say 20 hours of having her she was at the vet and prescribed some antibiotics. She is fully recovered now and stopped showing symptoms about a week and a half ago.

I have been very worried that it is Mareks disease. She has been sick for about a month and a half and hasn't gotten any other mareks symptoms (i.e paralysis, green iris). She does although have some white spots oh her skin. I don't know if they are tumours or feathers growing it. The look very different to my other girls.Im really new to mareks and have no clue what I'm looking for! All the websites have information and no pictures or pictures of it at its worst stages.

The thing in the eye may be a tumour but once again completely new to tumours in chickens also! I don't think it is causing her neurological symptoms as her behaviour is remaining the same, still eating and drinking. I haven't seen her dust bath recently, but that may be because of exhaustion as she is sleeping quite often.

As I live in a small town, an avian vet is not really an option sadly (hopefully in the future i'll be that option!). We do have a vet who is happy see our chickens but mainly sees dogs and cats e.c.t so he may not be fully informed on chickens. Also, as it is "just a bird", he is hesitant to give us the best for her, more often the cheaper version.

This picture isn't the best as she get VERY annoyed when I'm trying to look at her eye. Also it is an iPhone camera. I tried my best to gat a good picture of the spots.

If she'll let you you can apply terramycin ointment in her eye 2 x day for a week and see if that will help.

You can buy it at Tractor supply or order it online.

Here some information about treating upper respiratory infection in chickens-which usually starts with a 'bubble' under the eye. Remember most of the products you can find online or in a store is antibacterial. They won't work on a viral infection.

I'd call your vet and ask if he knows anything about treating chickens or about mareks disease before even taking her.
Just the stress of going might be detrimental to her stability.

You might want to see if there's a state thread here where you could ask for a positive referral for an avian or exotic vet.
