Massacre at my house - Update with the neighbor

So Sorry for your Loss. We had a similar incident this summer with our neighbor's Akita. I caught the dog with my hen in her mouth, threw rocks, hoping my hen was still alive...when their daughter called the dog back. Unfortunately, my hen was gone. I was so upset I immediately called our town's dog catcher, who happens to be a chicken breeder. She went right over to the neighbors, who denyed it was their dog and told her it may not have been a dog who did this! aack.
Anyway, the dog catcher suggested she set a trap and we catch the Akita. Then they would have to pay to get the dog back--each time getting higher. If their dog is coming in our yard, for my hens, then we have the right to stop this.
Maybe this might work for you in the future. After they pay for your losses and property damage, the trap idea seems like it could work. I am glad he accepts responsibility for what his dogs did. That's a good first step.

When you bill them you can bill them for the damage that they did to your coop, and the price of the baby chicks are 4.00 pullets are up to 20.00 and laying hens can be more.
They can't make the arguemnt the a baby cost 4.00 if they did not kill a baby.
My husband is a lawyer.

We tried the dog trap thing but all we caught were raccoons and wild cats. The guy who was setting it for us said that it was unlikely that we would catch the dog because it is well fed and is only after the sport of killing our chickens. He recommended that we wait for it with a gun (our situation is different in that we have no idea who it belongs to or where it comes from, just big and very careful and very strong). I hope this gets resolved really quickly.... Hugs to you!

Be careful. Don't trust that he'll do the right thing just cuz he said he would. A neighbors dog came and attacked my sheltie. I went around to find the owner of the dog. He came to my house to find me and said he'd take responsiblilty.... until he got the bill! Then his insurance co. said he said his dog never did it. It was a letter stating that we will take him to court that he finally, paid up. Never mind the nursing I had to do to the poor girl and the pain and suffering she went thru! It was horrible, she had tubes coming out of her from all the puncture wounds. Her teeth were pulled out from trying to protect herself. They had to wire them in. Hope your neighbor won't back out!

I know charging my neighbor my paid price stopped his dog getting loose --what you didn't add in that I did was the s/h charge --- to replace those birds at that age would require s/h even the cheapest price is 40.00 so you were more then fair ---

I am again real sorry for your loosing the birds

dont forget the price of what their offsping would be worth,in this state if you have a ewe that is killed you can sue for the sheep it self and its lambs it would have had,if you were raising show quality birds and selling them for that reason start adding zeros to your bill,I know money wont bring your pets back but takes alittle of the grief away,
best to you and yours

Just only read this today, sorry for the loss of your birds.
