australian spotteds are a bantam duck but not a call

OK this post hit me like a ton of bricks tonight. Can you guys tell me if they take 26 days like the calls or 28 days to hatch?

YO where's that update?? I peeked at my bator eggs and all little swimmers are looking jolly on day 11!

I forgot to mention that I have Mysteries Unknown under two goose girls. It's their first time setting and I think Beamish has a good chance of hatching something, but I think Guinness was putzing around too much on and off the nest to have actually gotten anything started. I'd love to candle whatever's under them. I have to read up on how exactly to go about that without making fierce enemies..

I have 9 healthy ducklings and 1 with feet that don't open. Does anyone have advice on how to splint the feet open so the baby can learn to walk right? Hips seem fine, joints are fine. No slipped tendon.

Just candled them now - after getting home from an errand that took longer than expected! Congrats on your 69 little ones!

Anyhoo...all ten were moving, I'm pretty sure. They seem to be slowing down a bit - hopefully that's alright. It's getting rather dark in there. 14 (13) more days!

Ooh, goslings! Or did you think some of them might be duck eggs? Anyway, hope they hatch! How long does a goose egg take to hatch?

About the incubation term length...hmm, I don't know. I don't know too much about calls (didn't know they only took 26 days) and don't know anything about Aussies, either. Sorry!

Diamond88 - how small is very small? You don't need to stop spritzing - that actually helps them to dehydrate more (because it opens the pores or something of the sort).

Don't worry - I'm sure they'll be fine - I think you're doing what you should be. I've been really worried about this hatch, too, and thought I'd probably killed them with too-high temperatures at first, but they're still looking okay. I've been a bit confused about my air cells, too. Some look big and some are smaller, so it makes trying to set humidity a bit tricky.

Goin Quackrrs - congratulations on your cuties! I'm not sure how to splint...I've never hatched before. You might try searching the forum - I'm sure someone's talked about how to do it.

I got the advice I needed. I thought I knew what to do, but needed to make sure I wasn't doing more harm than good!

All this talk of egg candling is making me impatient! We are on day 2 here. When do you guys do your first candling? I was thinking maybe day 7 or should I wait until day 10?

I think usually the recommended time to candle to check for development is 7-10 days. That said...I candled earlier....

I know I checked at four days, and then at five days (probably peeked at a couple before then, too - but I don't think there was too much to see - I was getting rather discouraged that they weren't developing) - there was a big difference between day four and five. It was still not absolutely clear to see though, on all of them. But then I re-candled all of them on days 7, 10, and 14. I may be candling too much - now I'm going to try to wait until the 21st-25th day, although I'm not sure what I'll be able to see then, it'll be so dark in there.

Also, my eggs are pretty cream-colored (light)...so darker eggs may be harder to see through. You have calls, though, don't you - those are pretty light in color, I think.

Those are the eggs I am setting. They are supposed to be "assorted call duck eggs" that I bought on ebay from a seller who apparently owns a few hundred calls. They are kind of a funny blue-green-gray color and I am a little worried that I won't be able to see through them when I candle. I accidentally threw out an Ameracauna egg once because I thought it was a dud, but it wasn't

. I saw someone said on one of the other threads that some Call eggs can be bluish and/or greenish colored... All I know is that if a bunch of chicks hatch out it is going to be a wreck the likes of which that seller has never seen.
