Broody Betty will get her eggs this afternoon.
what color sussex are you hatching kannna ?

I have a chick! I have a chick! When broody got off her nest I peeked in and had one pipped. Within 5 minutes chick was out! I had to hurry her back up to get back on. I can't believe we got to see it hatch being in a broody nest. First hatch ever! Three more to go with no signs of pipping.

I got my first purebred Buff Orpington chick from my own flock today! It's rather sticki even though the humidity was 70%, dunno if it'll fluff up. The inner membrane was dried onto the chick. Removed most of it, so hope it'll fluff up like all the others. I can't believe how much bigger it is than the bantie mix chicks! I'm really eggcited about this chick.

I have about 5 more buff orp chicks due to hatch during this month and adding more as long as my girls are laying and there's space in the bator. I really hope there are some girls hatching this year, only 2/6 BO chicks turned out to be girls last season... With the other two hens gone broody, means we have to buy our eggs... All of our own eggs are used as hatching eggs so we can have some more laying chickens next year. With the chicken math we should be fine, right? Haha

Wow, that's awesome! You're really lucky to be able to see that. Congrats! Just sit tight now, the others will hatch soon enough.

she will probably fluff out mel do you leave them in the bator or put them directly into a brooder ? the bator at 70% may cause her to stay a lil damp,,,,, how many eggs do you have your broody BO,s working on ?

I talked with a local breeder yesterday and got some interesting info. Seems a lot of breeders here are having low hatch issues. The man I talked to has been breeding and showing for 25+ yrs and hatched 70 out of 300 on his last hatch and said other long time breeders here are getting like results. I'd been holding on to a few eggs in the bator that I thought were clear but was not 100% sure. After talking with him, I came home and candled and ended up tossing 8 eggs - 7 clear, 1 blood ring.

That leaves me 27 out of 45 on day 13. Pretty good veining and movement in the rest...keeping my fingers crossed. At this rate, I'll be happy if anything makes it!
