May Hatch Thread--Fill up those bators n' broodies!

. Man I always miss the good stuff ! I wish I would have been there to watch you unload on her jm ,,,,, darnit !!! I would have told her to keep her precious eggs and have them for breakfast !

Oh get this, her special is Tolbunts hatching eggs for sale, none older than 10 days $65 a dozen....and people flock to buy them and get maybe 1 to hatch. I have to post you her notes on hatching a Polish Tolbunt.

Shipped eggs :
Check your air cells! If they are dislodged, detached, saddled or wobbly let them sit 4 days. Then you will incubate but you will not turn for 4 days

Polish : 100 degrees at 35% day 1-17 on day 18 you will gradually increase your humidity to 55% in small increments and you will drop your temp to 99 doing this at
.1 degree every 2 hours.
Tolbunts increase humidity for lock down to 65% USE ONLY DISTILLED water incubators

.1 degree every 2 hrs??? are you serious??? And she said my well water was dangerous for the chicks. Lord Please make sure I never meet this woman face to face.

I think about 2 hrs. I am pretty much Central Missouri Maybe just a little South. I have looked everywhere for eggs where I could pick them up. Or chicks for sale.
Oh good...someone will help you find other eggs! Or maybe you "don't have" a styrofoam incubator anymore...maybe you bought a brinsea or whatever fancy one they have just for those eggs, huh? She probably wouldn't sell to me either...homemade incubator and all...LOL...They are hers I guess she can do what she likes with them and probably really feels she has their best interests at heart. I'm sure she means well.

I can relate to scrambled shipped / posted eggs!!!!!!!!

Guys I think we might have a dead lot again.
I have been watching the temp and humidity for days - and checked it about 4 pm it was sitting at 38 which is about 99.5/100 and humidity was 40% Just 2 hrs later DH came in and found the Temp sitting 110 and humidity 50%????????????? I know you lot said spike on the third day but what the heck happened - nothing was moved or changed except the humidity tray was filled up again.
I am really upset by this turn of events. I know they cannot survive in that kind of heat. We have moved the bator to the dinning room as it is cooler in there during the day. We managed to get the temp down pretty quick to 38.2 and humidity is still at 50% and is not comming down.

We will keep them untill day 7- and candle them. I guess we will see red rings all over! I am not hopeful and am very low right now.
You all seem to be having so much success and mine end up dead and scrambled no matter what we try.
I Can sure go off folk real quick round here! BLAAAA BLAAAA BLAAAA not listening!!!! :barnie :he
Oes - Darn :hit

I had the same thing happen on day 3!! Up to 108... I'm not giving up until day 25... Lol!!! I have more shipped eggs coming (ugh!) and don't know if I should try the staggered incubation or not... They are just too expensive to have none hatch! I'm so sorry Oes that you've had such a hard run lately! Let's just see what happens!!!

I think she is missing the REAL issue ... which is that any SHIPPED eggs are a crapshoot, regardless of what incubator is being used. There are many, many examples of near perfect hatches using a Styrofoam still air incubator, including homemade ones. Many of these successes were, however, with local eggs. Scrambled shipped eggs would still be scrambled shipped eggs, even if they were placed in an expensive automated incubator. Humpty Dumpty could not be put back together again, and neither can scrambled shipped eggs.

I think she seriously believes what spews out her mouth. Like those of us with styrofoam bators dont deserve the breeds we want and love?

Really? Well water is dangerous to use for incubating eggs? Where does her water come from? Has she tested your well water while you were not looking? Maybe some well water could have minerals or something in it that would harm chicks, but I've not used distilled water either. I've read quite a few articles on this site about hatching and have only come across one person who said distilled water was the best to use. Others say the water doesn't matter as much as it matters that you use the dry hatching method so the chicks do not drown. I have read about people who say when they switched to distilled water their hatched went way up, but I'm new to hatching and have never tried it. I'd love to see how she packs though eggs...just for kicks and giggles.

All I know is, you might want to stay clear of a chick that requires this much attention to detail in order to hatch. Sounds like too much work to me!

You need that incubator especially the styrofoam ones, in a room that stays 60-70degrees consistantly. Are you sure it is the bator and not your temp gauge? When I was setting up the 2nd bator, I would get stable for a couple days them bam my temp would jump or drop. This is an empty bator. So I decided to test the thermostats with my ones in my other bator that I knew were working. That was the issue. Also, when you filled the humidity tray, did you put in warm water? Cool water? Tepid water?

Honestly, I'm sure she does believe that she is doing the best for her chicken's eggs and for the good of the breed, but I do hope you are also able to hatch the chicken breed you love as well and do not have to break the bank to buy a fancy smancy incubator to do it...You can built one for under $50 that will do quite a bit better than the fancy Brinsea ones if you know anything about programming in my humble opinion.
