May Hatch Thread--Fill up those bators n' broodies!

. No just leave her be to hatch her clutch she will do fine after she is done then you can move her and the peeps to a private location get your self some good non medicated chick starter and electroliytes for the water and let her brood them keep the water shallow under 1 inch deep they will not need food or water for a couple of days

and toe biters lol

The oes is not going to hatch again this year! Sorry but it is really upsetting when things don;t go well.

The wee one seems to be fine running about the place. Home wrecking already! We are going to put her into the brooder as soon as we can but Dh is making sure the temp stays ok in the box. - He is going to use the old incubator as a brood box and just keep lowering the temp it has a red bulb in it and the other two chicks used that last time.

The sad news is that we eggtopsied the rest today and :
Out of the 6 eggs.
1 live late hatch day24. Needed help.
2 fully formed full term dead chicks
3 none starters clears nothing but yolk. ( But not slow scrambled this time!)

So what went soooooo wrong??????

we will be needing to buy a playmate. We intend to do that soon if this one gathers more strength. I have a jam jar lid in the bator and have put her beak into it a few times. She was not impressed and as soon as I turned my back she prompty put the sponge into it!
I bought some chick feed today it is for babies up to 8 weeks so hope it will be fine.
I think she must have used a lot of what remained of her yolk in the shell. It was just a shriveled mustard colour nothing in it when she was hatched out. As for red blood veins there were only those on the top of her head where the foot was stuck - none of the other veins in the membrane bled at all . The other dead chicks had NO blood at all.

I really want to keep her alive. DH is now calling it Eggbert? I said Eggberta? The temp was reading 41 when I got home ???? What is happening to these temp gages and everything???? I opened the lid and let the heat out asap - she just looked at me - "like What are you doing to my heat source???? "
Oes -
I get why you don't want to try again too soon. But I'm placing a bet we'll see you on a hatch thread again in the future! With local eggs and a more trustable bator you'll get more fun than stress out of it for sure. But there is no point if you don't feel like it. Enjoy your little peeper now, and her playmates when they arrive.

Sounds like Eggberta is one lucky baby chicken. When she has made it this far I see no reason why she shouldnt survive. Congrats again, I'll see you in the baby-chick-threads!

Why non medicated?
My hens and chicks have a pie pan of medicated starter in the 'nursery'.  Should I be concerned??
if you prefer medicated by all means use it I myself only use medicated feed on the birds I incubate and brood artificially I let the hen take care of making sure the peeps get all the sand grit and natural antibodies they need I find a real difference in vigor and feathering between natural and artificially hatched and brooded chicks

This is what has worked for me over the years I tend to only help my Broodys when needed I feel a little more at ease letting nature take her course my hen hatched chicks tend to feather out a full week ahead of my incubated birds of the same age I don't do any thing a whole lot different feed is non medicated lighting is not 24-7 I use same electrolytes in the water for both but they just do a lil better they all catch up in the end once they are turned out ,,,

Had a bit of an idea in the kitchen tonight. I was trying to give the baby some yogurt and some water and chick feed which is softened with water. S/HE was doing ok but very vocal a lot of the time. S/He is getting lots of attention though. Eggburt seemed a bit distressed at being alone so I gave him a teddy but he didn't take to it much. Then tonight I was doing dishes and put my hand to the dish cloth. It is YELLOW! I turfed through the cupboards to find a new one and viola new fluffy yellow mummy hen flanky! Bless him he ran to it right away and climbed on top. He has not left it alone since and is snuggled up in the fluff he is not nearly as vocal so I hope that means less stressed. (ok I said HE I know but the chances of it being a girl knowing my luck!

I am just hoping it will live. We are going to see someone we know tomorrow to see if they have a baby brother or sister for our little guy. Our other two Roos went to live there so we may even get a chick back from our own roo boys? That would be good!

. Sounds nice ,,,,,,,,

Sounds like a sweet deal, oes! So happy for you.

I got two new hatchlings today, both buff orpingtons from my own flock. I noticed they both have a teeny tiny bit of leg feathering, almost invisible but definitely there. Interesting, must be something from when their strain had some cochin thrown in to give them fluffier skirts.

No more hatching here until I get back from surgery in a couple of weeks. Being admitted to the hospital tomorrow, so now I gotta go instruct my mom on the chicken routines! Sure feels weird to let someone else take care of my birds for that long, especially while having tiny ones in the brooder. They'll be so big when I get back! I'll miss you guys, but I'll catch up in the june thread
