Oh, Warcard - I kind of wondered if that lady didnt't keep him for a while just like you suggested... he has a different collar on than we had on him. I wish I knew! Also, when I took him to the vet after we first adopted him, I asked them about the teeth grinding (he also had kennel cough when we first got him... poor guy). They said they had never seen a dog do it all the time like he did... they said they thought it started out as a reaction to stress, but they were afraid it had become a habit for him. We bought him different chewies and tried to keep him occupied and that seemed to help reduce the grinding so that he only did it on occassion, but it does always get worse when he is stressed. He hasn't been doing it as much this evening as he got settled into his old routines.

Oh and I ordered new collars for both dogs today. I had bought them tags for their collars with all their information on them, but they kept losing them somehow, so I just bought collars that have a name plate riveted on them. Hopefully those will work better!

Umm A fence? Secure sock collar, anything to protect your dogs would be nice. A hound is a hound, once their nose is to the ground. Why don't you protect this one? How many do you need to "lose?" If you want pets its your responsibility to take care of them.

I can't tell you how sick I am of cleaning up owners animals off the road and watching them put them down at the shelters. If you want animals take care of them!

I agree, some type of containment on your part as its your responsibility to ensure he doesn't just run loose. Its illegal in most places, to allow pets to run loose. Beagle and beagle mixes are dependably wandering hounds even w/responsible owners who have large fenced yards. Tie him out to do his business and let him right back in if you do nothing else...he's too precious to allow to run off...?!?! The next thing he'd do is make you mad for chasing and killing your chickens if you continue to let him loose. Just look at that absolutely sweet face...

Please don't attack me. I love my dogs. We don't own where we live and putting up a fence isn't an option. From the time we got him he was always on a leash to potty. When he proved that he would stick right with us, he was allowed to go out without a leash. When he showed us that he would potty and play in the yard with the other dog, we allowed him to do so. He had been excellent about staying in our yard and the surrounding property (farm fields belonging to my landlord) and coming right back home. When he strayed too far, he would return immediately if we called his name. When we'll be gone for a short time he is kept in his crate in the house - when it will be longer, we tie him out (even though he absolutely hates it). We do try to watch out for our pets, even if you don't think so. I'm sorry that my post upset you.

snowydiamonds... I'm sorry, but only allowing him out to potty and then make him stay inside would make him absolutely miserable.

I am glad your baby is home. Not knowing what he went through....he may never stray again!!! Work with him....I think all dogs are trainable. You will know soon enough if he will wonder again. When you get your own house...then you can choose to put up a fence or not. We personnaly have three dogs and no fence....it can be done.

Just remember...there are over 5000 people on here and 5000 opinions!!

First Congratulations..Second...Dont bother with a shock collar or low voltage electric type fence. Once a hound gets the scent of something there is no stopping them from tracking it, I know this because I had a hunting hound that was just as good as gold until he got a whiff of something and off he went right through the fence with the shock collar! He was amazing! We would here him baying (that funny barking noise a hound does) and then we would have to track him.

Oh and Chevygirl dont feel bad..Sometimes dogs are just little houdinis'. We tried everything with our hound, he even got out of a harness..But we loved him..Just give yours lots of love and kisses!

You will always find people who think they are perfect, make all the right choices and nothing bad ever happens to them. Most of us aren't like that and know how these types of things happen.

My dogs are always inside dogs, but I had a husky once that would ignore the door 90% of the time, but somehow would know that exact moment we let our guard down and out the door past us he would bolt. We would have to spend lots of time chasing him. Luckily he wasn't as smart once he got out the door because we always caught him. Took 3 or 4 of us though! My neighbor has a fenced in yard and his 2 dogs are often loose and in my yard. I usually have to catch them and keep them in crates til they get home and come for them. They find a way to escape a 6' solid fence somehow.

Dogs who want to run are going to find a way to do it, no matter what you do. I work with mine outside, but they still want to take off as soon as they get a chance. I envy those people that have dogs in their unfenced yard just calmly laying around not caring what goes on past the edge of the yard. I don't think I will ever know how they get their dogs like that!
