Maybe I just have different standards

What is the percentage of damage now as compared with previously? Either offer that (say the damage now covers twice as much area, so offer half his estimate ($250)) or else require him to get an estimate from a repair shop you trust; they need to know the full story about both accidents. They will almost certainly be able to tell which damage is new versus old. In all your dealings with him, make sure to include a statement about the original damage your son caused being significantly less than the new damage that your family had no part in causing. A paper trail showing that there is extensive new damage is needed in case he takes you to small claims court to get you to pay the cost.

Also, you and DH need to get on the same page about this--find a compromise position you can both live with and then each of you need to abide by it--no going behind each others backs. If one of you thinks you need to alter your compromise, it needs to be discussed between you two before it ever gets ANY discussion with anyone else. For example, if friend makes an offer that falls outside the agreement between you and dh, dh needs to say, "we'll think about it and get back to you" not "well, that seems reasonable."

Make sure that to get the $200, he must sign a note saying that you have paid in full for all damages caused by your son. Be simple, straightforward and leave no loopholes that he can come back to claim more.

I do not drink myself so when this guy turns into "that guy" when hes drunk its annoying x20.

Just showed the SO the damage to his car and he couldnt believe that "friend" was saying that the head light needed replacing. The headlight was BUSTED in the picture.
AND he didnt tell SO about any new damage. ...just acted like nothing else happend

(he played down the damages on his car when he told me about it and Im guessing he thinks I didnt tell SO)

first off........ at this point, I'd say....... PROOVE it!

No police report your car hit his, no witnesses, no case (oops, unless you put it in writing)!!!

Second, get a quote to have the scratches fixed on your car, you do have witnesses! Use that as leverage if it ever goes to court etc..

Third, call the shop and ask them directly the cost to fix the ding/scratch your car caused his, to make sure he doesn't pull a fast one.

Forth, I would never have anything to do with that greedy person again!

My car didnt cause anything but the headlight to shine downwards...

I figured out how to get the picture my sister took a couple weekends ago off my text

He told my SO yesterday "they have to replace the whole headlight"
Last I saw the car there was no dents and the headlight was NOT busted...

I'd still be calling the shop myself and asking him if the damage to the head light was due to the second accident... and if you do decide to pay for it. Call around to junk yards and get a used one. Lots cheaper than a new one. You're not obligated to replace with oem parts.
