Some hatcheries, like Ideal, will mark the male for you if you request it.

The batch I have now are bantams from someone kind of local...I have no idea what I have, but I think I have at least 2 boys that will be finding a new home. My order coming in March is 14 pullets, plus who knows how many roos for warmth lol. Thge extra roos as well as a few pullets will be finding new homes once I decide who I am keeping

Edit: Ideal marks the males with a mark on their heads if requested...dont know about banding though...

Great feedback, wondering if you all know which of the following are companies that are just middlemen (drop ship companies that by from true hatcheries) or which ones are true hatcheries.
I would think if they have the word hatchery in their name that would have some significance

at cackle theve always marked anything i asked them to. unless it was for male -female in a straight run, they wont do that, thats defeating the purpose of straight run.

LOL That's opening up a can of worms. Some say yes, some say no. In my opinion they're all about the same, you might get good or you might get poor examples. Just don't go by the pictures on the websites, they're not usually of the actual stock.

There's another 'tier' of hatcheries. Sandhill Preservation, Superior Farms and Holderread Waterfowl. I know Holderread's are far superior when it comes to waterfowl, I have heard that the other two have better poultry but I couldn't tell you for sure.

I think it differs with different breeds of chickens, too.

I especially like the EE's from Cackle. They lay a lot of eggs, and they are good hot weather and winter layers. My people who buy eggs from me really like those green and blue eggs.

I have gotten EE's from a couple other places and they have not been as good.

I appreciate all your info and ongoing education....anyone want to meet me at the post office to split an order of these?

I've had meraks at our little farm so I don't feel right about raising them and then letting them go. They could infect the rest of peoples stock. I'm very conscious about not doing that. But the post office would be fine...or a secluded spot under a freeway (you know ala a drug exchange we would just be getting chicks) Oh my I'm nutz!
