"Avian Encephalomyelitis is a relatively rare infectious disease of chicks caused by a picornavirus. It's chief symptoms are loss of coordination and rapid trembling of the head and neck, giving the disease its common name, epidemic tremor. The disease is transmitted from breeders to chicks through hatching eggs. An adult outbreak is so mild it is likely to go unnoticed, lasts less than a month, and leaves birds immune without making them carriers. Survivors of a chick outbreak should be culled, since they rarely develop into good layers or breeders." -The Chicken Health Handbook by Gail Damerov

Yup this is my concern, I want to know what is going on, I hate the idea of loosing all the chicks as if it is AE all the chicks I have have been exposed.
so I'm on the mission instead of blaming but finding our through a vet what is going on. Then I can deal with what it means.
and having carelessly composted my chick litter I may have exposed all my chickens.

The book says there are no known human risks, so I guess that means you could eat the eggs. Please let us know what you find out carousel, you are lucky to have an avian vet near you.

Near is all relative

My feeling is that I need to know what is going on, so I know what to do next.
It makes NO sense to me to run around saying the sky is falling, and blaming McMurray and not really KNOW what is causing problems to the chicks.
I'm wondering if perhaps there was a bad batch of vaccine? my chicks got Mereks vaccination who knows.......
I will keep people posted

I have been in touch with a person from each of the following,
Wis. Veterinary Diagnostic Lab. in Madison
Wis. Veterinary Diagnostic Lab. in Barron
UW Wisconsin Poultry Extion.

Thay are going to read these post and try to help.

The Poulty ex. spoke with MN Veterinary Diagnostic Lab. and said they would do lab work, but I have to euthanize the sick ones and overnight them to MN. I will try to do this.

Maybe it would help if we could get a few pic of what the chicks look like when sick and have people keep post what the sick chicks act like when sick.

Here is a list of what my chicks are doing,
first chick got sick at the end of week one, they are now 14 days old.
1.sit on feet and hocks, are wobble
2.unactive, no peeps, lean on wall
3.wont stand with legs full extended.
4.wont go to water or food, then
5.lay flat on side with legs straight out, then
6.get trampled flat by other chicks.
7.They keep living if I hand water them, but after a few days they are very thin and die.

I now know what signs to look for and if they wont walk with legs extened then I but them in the other brooder, now know as the box of death.

Amen! My chicks are going to Penn State University early next week to get a determination as to what the problem is. Will keep posted.

Brett.

THANK YOU!!! to those heading to vet and vet schools!
I know if I loose a chick it will be going to the Avian vet.
she said she would do whatever she could.
in the mean time....... trying to decide if I should delay my Ideal order............
I'm glad I made the order if I end up loosing all the chicks.
was hoping to have them feathered out before I head out for a vacation the end of May.

Good! If this hurts my adult chickens....it will be WAR! I have made a slight breakthrough....

SOME OF MY CHICKS ARE RECOVERING!

My sickest can kind of walk with some control!
If she lives, she has a permanent place with us FOREVER!
