I made a video of mine. Believe it or not, they are a thousand times better. They used to just lay on their sides and cheep loudly! My babies are walking!!!!!

Hey Stormhorse, I was just getting ready to suggest that (video)

For neurological-looking things, where there is really distinctive behavior, it can be very useful to take some representative video footage in case a vet or pathologist wants to know more about what was going on. It is basically free and may come in useful for figuring out what the problem is. And *now*, when the chicks are sick but still alive, is the time to do it.

Good luck,

Pat

I have been watching these postings for a while now and finally decided to post. Please bear with me, I've never posted before.

I, too, have sick chicks from McMurray. They will be 3 weeks on Saturday and started getting sick at about 1-1/2 weeks. The symptoms are the same. I would have to agree that it sounds like AE.

Out of 13, I have 5 in the "sick" brooder and have lost one...the other 7 are currently healthy. I've got one sick brahma, 2 wyandottes, and 2 speckled sussex. All my marans are fine. Two of the chicks seem to be doing much better and are walking fine, but I am still keeping them with the sick bunch.

MY order was split with a friend (we divided the order immediately). At first, it was just me with the problems, so I assumed it was something I did. Then, yesterday, 3 of hers came down with it. We called McMurray and they were very nice about it, but had no idea what could be wrong. We are receiving replacements for the chicks on Monday. I ordered from McMurray last year and got perfectly healthy chicks...didn't lose even one. But...in this case, it does seem to be something that happened at the hatchery.

I'm very worried about the new chicks. Is keeping them in a separate brooder enough? Should I keep them in different rooms too?

Thank you to everyone taking their chicks in. I'll be anxiously awaiting the outcome.

Don't even bother seperating them. It doesn't do anything. My healthy Ideal chicks came in contact with the mcmurray chicks and they are still in perfect condition. So did my outside birds. They either get sick or they don't. And yes, I would be worried.

Edited to add- DO keep them in a seperate brooder because they tend to be stepped on.

First I too want to thank those getting info from a vet, and all who have posted with their losses.

I am a 1st time chick owner. Received my birds from McMurray on March 10th. Weather for shipping was in between storms. Receive phone call from PO on that Monday AM.

I ordered 5 each of
Blue Laced Wyndottes lost 1 and 1 very weak/frail
White Wyndotted all thriving
Rose Comb Brown Leg lost 4
Silver Spangled Hamburgs lost 2
Light Brahmas lost 1
All loses in 1st 24 hours

Ordered 25 Dark Cornish all thriving.

When I called MM to report the losses, (thanks to this thread) I was treated very well, and told I should have had no losses. She said she would give me credit or replace the chicks.

I am now going to wait before I place my next order as hopefully we all will get some answeres soon.

I forgot to mention, I was in Ft Collins, CO last weekend and went into a Murdochs Farm and Feed store, to look at their chicks and they had a sign posted saying that they were missing a lot of breeds do to a problem at Welp (?) Hatchery. This may be bigger than we think...

My heart goes out to all who have lost any chicks too.

Hi all,

Just my .02, Lonecowboy and I have chicks that are going on 4 weeks old from MM. I think we lost two but other than that they are all doing wonderful (a total of 78 were shipped.) The only think I see different on many of these posts is that we didn't get ours vaccinated. Just wondering, out of all the chicks that are sick, is there anyone who didn't get the vaccinations or did they all get it. Just curious....

I was wondering about the same thing, I wonder if there was a bad vaccine batch........
mine were vaccinated for Mereks, I'm wishing I would not have.....
