Mega algae problem in waterers. What is the best way to get rid of it?

No, Algae won't hurt chickens. I use a goldfish, two/three in the rain barrel I use by collecting rain off the coop roof to eat the algae and skeeters

What metal is the waterer made of?

The further apart the metals are, the more reactive they will be.

If the waterer is zinc galvanized, adding copper and an electrolote; ie, vinegar or mineral water will make a battery.

ok i am using steal and it pretty high up on the list. so is it the more reactive the less algae or less reactive the more algae?

I have the same problem. I use the hard plastic dog crocks for waters. I keep the bowls shaded with boards. But I still have to srcub them out once a week. I just use a little bleach and let them soak for a few minutes. Rinse and scrub and rinse again. Works great.

The reactivity is for metals, not algae.

The white ones are better IMO. I had white, orange and green buckets for water for my dogs and the colored ones grew algae quicker than the white ones. They all got cleaned the same days, filled and all are in the shade.

I would avoid the pennies in the water bowls. Pennies are not made from copper anymore. They are filled with zinc and copper plated. Not sure if the zinc at that level is even safe.
