Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

As of 1972 under the Migratory Bird Act, all birds of prey are protected by both federal and state law. You can receive anywhere from a $50 to $10,000 fine and up to 3 years in jail for killing a bird of prey. Although there are certain permits that can be acquired if one really wants to kill a raptor under specific conditions where damage is being done to livestock/property.

But you should never kill a bird of prey, yes they make life difficult when it comes to raising poultry but they also keep rodent and insect populations down.

There are some endangered raptors in Michigan including barn owls, prairie falcons, and short eared owls. As of threatened there are merlins, red shouldered hawks, and long eared owls. Osprey, bald eagles, and, northern harriers are also on a special watch list.

I let my chickens out to free range for the first time today and I just wanted to share! They LOVED it!
