I have gotten chicks from TSC, and ordered from Townline hatchery in Holland MI, both were good experiences.

The TSC in Lowell gets their chicks from Townline. Not sure about other TSC stores in the area, like Ionia, or the ones in GR.

Oh, I forgot... Starbard Farms has chick days. They're in Lowell, on Grand River Ave. I get my feed there, as I like to support independent family businesses. 616-897-9147. They're closed Sunday and Monday. Last year (maybe the year before...? time flies!) they got their chicks from Townline Hatchery. I think they took pre-orders, then had pick up days.

I've bought TSC chicks at times, and ordered from both MurrayMcMurray and Cackle. Because I like the white Chanteclers that Cackle carries, a friend and I order from them, and have been very happy with their birds.

To tag onto the question.... What if you want to start with only 4? Will TSC sell 4 at a time? I keep hearing mixed answers. I was thinking about TSC, Fowerville Feed or Family Farm and Home.

Feed store chicks are famous for being mislabeled in their bins, so be prepared!
You need to know what chicks of the breeds labeled actually look like, so you don't go home with totally unplanned individuals. Then, don't expect sexing to be correct, expect suprise cockerels too.

I think that I'll be getting chicks this year. My flock is getting old and I haven't had an egg since before the moult in fall. I'd like to move to an all lavender orp flock. I hope to find a breeder nearby but I'll be good with buff orps from TSC. I'm going back to an all orp flock. Maybe a couple of Uggos if I can find them.

My furnace was installed on Monday. It's so nice to have a reliable heat source in the house. I didn't realize how stressful not having a functioning furnace had become. I had the wood stove to stave off most of the cold but it didn't cover the entire house. I was worried that pipes could freeze. All of that worry has been eliminated. New furnace and water heater has buoyed my spirits immensely.

Winston is up to 18lbs and fitting in well. We are still working on the house training but he is getting pretty good. Bella, the old dog, is starting to have uncontrollable oops more than the puppy.

Last year mid-chick season TSC in Hastings & Ionia MI changed to allow a 4 chick minimum.

I need egg layers. I did get two blue eggs Wednesday!! First eggs in weeks. Lost two hens this winter. I don't want to deal with chicks, though. Farm and home have POL pullets in the spring, so I think that's what I'll do.

Ohhh. I'll have to look into this. I want to start out with only 4 pullets. The idea of getting chicks sounds great. But I've raised chicks when I was growing up. So been there, done that! Unexpected cockerels aren't appealing right now.

Raz, Why orps? They are on my list of potentials. But of course I'll be at the mercy of whatever ends up being available.
