It will keep coming back for easy chicken dinners. Can you put your ladies in lockdown?
As for the hawk I would guess Redtail.

Gonna have too. I get paid tomorrow, but I won't have a car to use to get run supplies till wednesday.. They free range, and I don't have a run at all. Just the enclosure under the coop thats 4x8 space... I was planning to build a run area before winter hits just to keep the turkeys from foraging in the chickens feed stations over the winter. Guess I will work faster on it now. But hey, guess the hawk needed to eat too. Can't really blame it. Well, I can, but sheesh. Why not a rabbit! Goodness knows there are a crap load around here. Oh... Easy meal. She put up a fight though by the looks of how many hawk feathers were mixed in with Minnies.

This is week 30 for my chicks. When I got them I was told that they were a couple of days old. I mark the calendar by how long I've had them.
That big egg was from Broast, I saw her come out of the little coop and that biggun' was still warm. Funny that the smallest egg came from the biggest hen (Extra).

1muttsfan, I forgot to ask, how old are the 2 lav.ams?

Oh Nova....sorry to see your pics.

I was out this afternoon working on my coop & wanted to let the girls out but couldn't because we also had a hawk hanging around. Thought maybe before it got dark but nope....He was hanging out down the road on a telephone pole on the other side of the ditch. Don't know what type but it's a hawk.

It's always nice to hear that when you have to re home a pet...chicken, dog, horse, whatever, that it's thriving and doing well in a good homey environment.

My coop is almost winterized thanks to the help of my DH. He did ask me at one point after he broke his 4Th drill bit "Did your grandpa go through this much prep for his chickens"? All I could do was smile and say NOPE!!

I spent a good part of yesterday putting in a poop baord and getting the small coop set up for the Icelandics. I also put fencing over the top of their run. I am paying for it today

I think it's from a Cooper's hawk. Right now our flocks are at their greatest risk due to the influx of migatory hawks. Most raptors migrate but only as far as necessary. As they travel south they will stay in an area as long as there is a food supply and the weather isn't too severe. I have found that October and November are the biggest problem months and since most raptors are early brooders the native birds are back by the Middle of February.

Nova, sorry for your loss, we lost a sussex last week to a hawk, they have been very busy this month. Raz, love your eggs. Fife, a little late but happy birthday!! would love to know how your vacuum works, love the idea of push a button and the floors are vacuumed.
chicken grandma, what is the name of your vet? I called a vet today in Cascade, wondered if it was the same one you go to. We have had some very sick chicks. lost one today. yellow runny stool. Seems to be hitting my black french marans. I started 1 on tetracycline Sat. night, noticed another with dirty vent feathers this AM brought her in the house and gave her some tet. then filled all the waterers with tet. and went to work. DH called and told me the one I brought in this AM died, 1st one on the tet. is still hanging in there. Gave her some Ivermectin tonight. the vet can't see her till Thurs. figured it's better to treat her with what I have then wait and loose her. So far the rest of the flock look OK. The vets in my area don't even want to do a stool sample on chickens. I think I need to educate them

Snowflake, my guess is you are seeing the lady vet at Cascade Animal Hospital? Dr. Reitzema, I think? I haven't seen her yet but she is an avian specialist and I have heard good things about her.
I think you may be able to get into Animal Clinic with Dr. R. Bennett or Dr. Renshaw at 133 - 28th St. S.E. Grand Rapids 49548 (Exit the 131 fwy and go one block East. they are across 28th street from the Beltline Bar. phone (616) 241-3651 They open at 7am.
I would try for Dr. Bennett if I could. He has many years of experience.
He is in on Mon - Wed.
