Good morning everyone. Just sitting here trying to wake up. Soon will be heading out to the woods with David. Hopefully he can get a deer or two. My neighbor shot a small doe in my backyard just at dark last night. Yesterday was his birthday and it was nice that he was able to get one to provide his own present. It's now hanging in my shop and I'll give him a hand butchering it. He has helped with several of mine and wanted to learn my techniques for butchering and sausage making.

Can anyone believe that another year has just about come to an end. The older I get the faster they seem to pass. Then next month I have a birthday to remind me of just how quick time passes. Last night I met my best friends son at the woods where we hunt. He is 1 month younger than my youngest son. As we stood talking I couldn't help noticing how gray his beard is. I guess at 37 that isn't that uncommon but it's still hard to relate to having sons that old. My oldest is 43. I sure glad I started my family while I was still in grade school or I'd be an old man.

I've got an hour before I head for the woods so if someone wants to have a cup of coffee with me.

Just listened to the weather forecast and it seems we have more snow coming and then much colder temperatures. So far the charm of owning a snowblower capable of handling large amounts of snow is working. I haven't needed to use it so far. I'm sure had I not bought it the snow would be 5' deep by now.

Morning Opa! I'm having coffee also right now. Actually, I'm about to get a second cup. We had a good christmas, and I'm glad everyone else did too.

We are going to a friends house in white lake today.

I put in a small test batch of eggs in a week ago. We candled them last night, and only two looked questionable. They were the blue eggs of course ( can't see a darn thing in them), so I know from last time to just leave em be and wait. They were the ones that hatched last time.

Ok, refilling my cup....

Good Morning Everyone.

And what a beautiful one it is. Been snowing here all night and we have about 3" on the ground. Talked to a friend of our last night who is only about 15 miles north and the first snow fall they've had was the day after christmas. Odd how just a few miles will make a big difference in weather.

We have a huge problem here and Im not sure what to do. A coming 2 yr old doe was laying under a pine tree all day Christmas eve day. She finally came up for some corn and apples I had put out only to see her not moving hardly at all. I got out the binoculars and she's got a right front broken leg. Looks to be snapped just below the shoulder about 4" down. Now Ive seen them lay around before with broken limbs, and they mend or they chew their own legs off and are fine. This one is so young, Im not sure she knows what to do? She's still here under the pine, comes up to eat and drink once in a while but the others just run her off.

Now the delema is, do I let mother nature handle it? Or take a clean slot and put her down? As I tried putting food and water for her under the pine when she was up, and all it did was push her farther back into the woods to lay down under another pine and not touch what I put down for her. I feel so bad. Wish I could just trank her down to have a vet fix her leg, but the vets around here wont touch'em I do have a dart gun and some ketamin to put her under, but I know nothing about fixing a broken leg nor what to wrap it up in, that she wont tear off.

Any suggestions would be so welcome. Thanks in advance. And keep your fingers crossed she makes it through this.

Hello everyone! I feel like I've come home. My computer crashed and I finally got a new one. I can talk chicken again! I missed being here so much. I'm sure its going to take awhile to catch up - I haven't been on since thanksgiving. I hope everyone had a great Christmas. We just got snow, snow, and more snow; kids are happy :)

Hmmm, that is a tough one about the little doe. I think I would have to put her down, it will be a really hard winter and I doubt she will make it. It seems more humane to die quickly than a slow starvation. Deer also don't do well with stress or anesthetic and might not survive you trying to put her under to fix her leg. Just my two cents, for what they are worth.

I just want to welcome all the new comers and to say thank you for the compliments on my grandbaby. I have not been on in awhile and wish I had more time.

Wish the kids would go back to school.

Not to break the thread, but could someone enlighten me. I have searched everywhere for this info. I am interested in getting npip certified. I don't sell eggs or chicks but if I decide to would like to have my chicks in a row so to speak. If anyone has knowledge of the law please help. I know the purpose of getting npip certified. But is it required by michigan law to be certified before you can legally sale eggs out of state. What I was told by the npip official is that you have to be npip certified if you plan to sell and ship out of state. Not saying I don't believe him but seems to me the only ones benifiting from this is the official and the guy who does the testing. Any input would be grateful. Thanks and Happy New Year!
