Taprock, how do you contact M.S.U.? Is there a number that people can call? Thank you.
I hope your favorite chicken pulls through and it is something simple to treat.
I know of people who have flocks that have had Mareks and they have kept the surviving chickens. They offered to give me a chicken from that flock and they had plans to bring new chickens into their flock.
I know of people who keep flocks that have chronic respiratory disease. I don't know how things will go when they bring new chicks in this Spring. Because I think even though the infection is resolved in the older chickens, the new chicks may or may not be exposed to the virus or bacteria.
About one of nine flocks in Michigan has Cocci in the chickens and the soil. And I know people sell, trade and ship these chickens to other farms thereby infecting a new flock and contaminating the soil in a new location.
So having those illnesses does not mean that you have to cull your flock but I am wondering if we practice farming this way how we can ever get on top of these diseases?
p.s. all the farms I am speaking of above are in Michigan.
