Mille Cochin Info

I haven't photographed all the babies again but we brought this cutie pie into the house yesterday. He's the one that doesn't have the right coloring but I think he's going to be quite interesting anyway. He's also very sweet. Always wants a tummy scratch.

He's checking out the cello case. (6 weeks)

I'll get my assistant to help me take pics of the other 11! They are amazing! Thank you Lynne!

I am relatively new to this, but if my understanding is correct, Porcelain requires Lavendar, which is not the same as Blue (as in Blue,Black,Splash).

I have a chick that is from a Splash roo and a MF hen. She is blue, and I'm hoping to cross her to my MF roo, but I think the best I can do is Blue Mille, not porcelain.
I have not come across very many Blue Mille's so I can't really say much other than they appear (to me) to be the same as a regular Mille but with Blue where they are traditionally black.

Anyone with more experience is welcome to correct me if my understanding is incorrect.

What a cutie pie! And after seeing him, I'm feeling much better about calling my 6 week old chick a SHE.

Oh yeah, the other 2 boys look just like him...very boy-ish! Thank you. I hate to say this but his personality is the best even though he's not the right color.

Thank you for this. I am asking because I have a MFC project going and purchased some SQ black Mottled Cochin eggs for mottleds to improve type on my Milles. I hatched 2 blues and 2 blacks. The blues were a surprize. Just wondering if useing the blues is going to create a whole new separate project? If so, I need to sell them if they can't be used in a normal Mille project. If their type was exceptional could they be used then cull the blues from the offspring?

Good questions.
I have Mille Fleur, Lavender/Self-blues and Black and Blue Mottles. I got the Black Mottle eggs to improve the type of my Mille Fleurs. I hatched a very nice type roo. He has red in his hackles but since I need him for Mille Fleur breeding, not Mottled, he is fine. Hatched with him were 4 pullets, two black Mottles and two Blue. Their type isn't as good as his. I am not sure what to do with them.
I do not plan to breed the Lavender/Self-blues with anything but themselves and a SQ black (since their type needs alot of improvement).

sooo.. in the chance of sounding redundant.... could someone tell me exactly which colors would be fairly 'safe' to use in type improvement? i've been following the color conversation here grace

I am guessing it's ok to use the black mottles, blacks, and? what else.... I have one MF hen in with my MF rooster, and I want to put other hens in with him that will still work for MF project color.

If you have MFC already then I would only introduce the Mottled to improve type. You could cross in buff Columbian but it would take a while to get the neck color out. It took me 2 and sometimes 3 generations to remove that. I am wondering if it may pop up in the future on some of mine since they all have had it and I am breeding them back together. But I will cross that bridge when I get to it.

It is best to look for very typy birds in MFC or Mottled so you won't be going backwards too much. I seem to do okay with 2nd generation from Mottleds and my type is often staying put.

Best advice...cull ruthlessly!
