Mille Cochin Info

I have definitely decided on one of my roos that is staying. Here is 3rd generation from Xavier, which is 4th generation from what I started with. This roos' mom is a sister to Inky, the black MF/Mot hen that Nancy often shows on here.

Introducing Royalle, a 6 month old.

Amy, he is a beauty~! No wonder he is a "keeper"....

I have enjoyed seeing all your wonderful chickens, and learning from you. So, I am sharing some of my chicken pictures and a little history . I have had backyard chickens for 25 years. Mostly bantam cochins and easter egg chickens that I bought at the feed store or from hatcheries. Last year I had the chance to buy Mille/Calico Cochins from Nevada and I fell in love with them. The good news is that I have what I think are some really beautiful chickens, but the bad news is that the chickens I bought have Marek's. I have lost chickens to critters before but have never had to deal with disease. I have lost a lot of my chickens this summer to Marek's, which broke my heart. I have talked with our local 4H leader and a local chicken breeder & shower and I believe that the worst of this nasty disease is behind me. I'm optomistic that the chickens that have survived will have resistance. Here's what I have left of my flock. I'm interested to hear what you think of them.

Thanks,
Janice

You have some lovely birds to work with! I think you will enjoy breeding them and getting some wonderful chicks from them.

A little fella I will be selling. I have too much red in my breeding program already and though he has super type, I still have many more to go through to see if any are staying. I will probably pair him with a MF/Mottled pullet, which will make an awesome start up pair.

I "love" this boy, too~! However, I want the (pullet?) in the background....yezzzzzzzzz

Quote: It is a buff. There is lack of light since she was inside the coop and I was too far away to get the flash to pick up her colors. I should have taken her outside but it is only about 44 degrees and I think she had had enough of outside. When it warms up in a few days I will get photos of her outside.

Quote: The pullet (3 months) in the background is a LF Cochin out of my crele project. I hatch about 30 of these a year because I use only one hen and sell out way too fast. This year I hung on to her and she is the only one I have. There is a long waiting list for eggs and chicks already for next year. Bo is a handsome fella but I can't quite capture his markings on another. I suppose if I devoted more time and energy to it I could but there is way too many projects on my farm! I need more ME to go around. LOL

I can get a better shot of her later. She needs to come out of this tractor and go into a big grow up pen but I haven't gotten that far yet. The peafowl project is slowing me down on my other chores.

I seriously need to bring in some white hens for Bo and work from there. Finding LF white hens is difficult and most LF Cochin I find are pinched in the rear. I am seldom happy with type on LF Cochin so I do not breed them as much. I want them to look like my Bo but in white.
