Minnesota!

Did you hit up the auction or is that this coming weekend?

We are going to the auction this Tuesday. We might try find a bull and maybe more heifers. My grando said we're not getting a bull unless its bigger than a buffalo... So we might not get one

. I really want a big one too. I like the giant cows more than small.

That's funny because some day I would love to have a Dexter or lowline :) my buddy and I joke that we could cross mini cattle to buffalo to develop our own breed of mini buffalo

Help Please!

I bought a beautiful young cockerel from Rich Vaughn who is on his way to Minnesota with Rich's father Robert.

He is to help me start my JG breeding next year.

Another hen is showing signs of Marek's disease.

Is there anyone who can take him for me until I know this disease has passed? I'll pay for feed and anything else. Just don't want to risk losing him!

Have you thought avout Jerseys?? They are small and sweet. And the steers make the best meat I have been told by the local butcherer. The only weird thing is the yellow fat and not white

Might I suggest getting a big dog crate (I would use a wire one) and place him away from the rest of the flock? In the garage or something might work if you have space. If you needed to, you could even set it up outside a garage or something with a tarp around it, leaving good ventilation. I had to do that with some hens one time and it worked. With the cold that is coming though, inside would be better.
I would take him if I had a place, but I am full right now except the tractors that are full of snow at the present.

Always tend to him before going to the other birds and always make sure you are cleaned when you go to him. You need to keep him quarantined anyway, for both his sake and your flocks' sake, in my opinion. Whenever you bring adult birds to your flock, it is prudent to keep them quarantined for about a month to see if anything does show up. This is one reason I rarely will bring a grown bird to my property. Sometimes you just have to to get the ones you need.

I don't get the whole duck thing! Where I live there is a bounty of wood ducks, teals, mallards to watch and kill (during season). What's the drive to keep them?
Ducks are funny to watch! The silliest creatures I have ever raised. However, they come with their share of negatives, like they are sloppy, messy, hole digging critters.
As for eggs, they laid when my hens were on hiatus due to molt or short daylight season. The eggs are a much thicker consistency and are great for baking.

I liked having the ducks once they were out on the ground and out of the brooder stage. We even have talked of digging a pond for them and fenced in a low spot that would be perfect for the inside the pasture, but I haven't had any since the fall of 2014 for convenience reasons.
