Minnesota!

There is a rescue in Minneapolis. I don't know how close you are or if that's an option for you. I'm sure they'd know which Roo is friendly and which needs a more "tolerant" home, shall we say. IDK..if you are wanting to go that route. Poor girls.

The ladies are missing their roo. They have been all out of sorts and grumpy. Lots of squabbling is going on now and an all out fight with blood drawn just happened between our new mama hen and one of the others. I'm almost regretting my decision to get rid of Mr Roo. :(

I have a Black Australorp cock/roo that you can have.

Just a heads up, that 'rescue' spays/neuters their chickens so don't expect a 'fully functional' rooster.
They claim it's because they don't want people adopting hens just for the eggs.

Thanks for the input everyone!

So if the "rescue" neuters the roosters, doesn't that make them a capon? And wouldn't that tempt many to fire up the bbq?

Have any of you added a rooster to your flock? What is the best way to integrate him in? Also, how do you quarantine? How long? What questions should I ask about the roo and flock it is coming from?

Triplell, how far are you from Cass Lake?

Yes we have. We put him in a pen for a week where all the girls could see him and talk with him. Then for a few days let him out on supervised visits. The hens were happy to have a Roo.

I quarantine everybody for 30 days. I use a smidge of the litter from my coop with fresh bedding tp help prevent coccidosis. I added 2 roos to my coop at the same time. I put them all out to free range together during the day and at night the roos just wandered into the coop with the girls.

My juvies mingle with the big girls while free ranging and usually at bedtime several of the babies end up with the big girls. My total flock count is 120 chickens 5 geese 7 ducks and 3 turkeys. For the chicken count only 17 are adults. My flock range area is alkost an acre so they have plenty of room to work out issues. During the day.

You have got to be kidding!!! What the H??? would someone think a hen would be for if she isn't going to lay eggs? That has got to be the most moronic thing I have heard in a long time!

It seems much more cruel to surgically alert an animal than just let them do what they've been breed to do. Maybe they should just have an agreement that the hen will live out is days at the adopter's house even after laying stops. What a waste of money! Use the chicken spaying money to spay some cats or something. Pretty sure my friend was going to adopt a battery hen from California but she couldn't because she sells her eggs. That's against their rules. Crazy!
