Minnesota!

Thanks, I also have ducks and geese. The geese will be moved outside at least the two pairs that are not laying yet. Most of the ducks are laying so they will stay in the barn with the chickens. Just two stalls that I had made into coops was damaged and hopefully can be repaired enough until spring. I count myself lucky as I have around 60 birds total. The FD was good about doing their job and yet not scarying them any more than they already were. THe also helped me get most of them outside out of the smoke. THen they helped me get most of them back inside. I am so glad that I went to do chores early do to the snow. I am heading down their now to get some pictures, I will post them when I get back inside.

Well we got dumped on by the snow. Snow drifts of at least 3 ft or more. We had a very excited evening, I went to do my chores around 7pm and I could smell something funny walking toward the barn. I opened the door and to my horror it was full of smoke. THE BARN WAS ON FIRE!!! I called 911 and ran to the house to get dad to help me try and get all the animals outside. To heck with that how about try and keep the fire under control until the FD arrived. 3 hours later the barn is saved, many chickens are sindged bad but still alive. Foam and water everywhere with two coops unusable until repairs can be made. could be till spring.

Dad and I suffered with some smoke inhailation as did many of the birds. We shall see who makes it through the night and go from their.
Oh no! I do hope you and your dad are feeling okay this morning, along with the chickens. Anything you need help with?

Oh thank you, right now I have to make another main coop for my layers. They are in the middle of the barn with the ducks but no real place to lay their eggs. We had to tear down part of my barrier fence so the geese can't go outside until I get some thing fixed up. I might have to wait until spring to repair the barn. I will be taking my time in taking out the bedding( shavings) do to all the water and foam from the FD. I might end up loosing two of my BA's as the feathers are like melted and their faces got burnt from the heat.

Ohhh noo!:th I'm so sorry. How are you & your dad? Do you know what caused it?
Yes we have figured it out that it was a socket on the heat lamp that shorted out. Dad and I are very sore and tired. It took three hours to get it out as it kept restarting. I was sick last night that the barn has survuved for more than 100 yrs old and me and my chickens had burned it down. Dad told me to not worry about it as it can happen to anyone and it was not my fault. Man, do I love the MAN my dad has become. Years ago he would have been screaming at me and saying IT IS ALL YOUR FAULT!! He wants to rebuild the portion and design it for chickens as well as most of the barn too. He aslo is gonna extend the electricity so that I wont need any extension cord anymore. All this from someone who never wanted me to get poultry. I love MY DAD!!!!

I had my whole coop burn to the ground a few years ago. You were lucky you went outside when you did. I just woke up one morning and it was gone! I killed a huge oak tree that was next to it too. I'm hoping my chickens died from smoke inhalation. It's still hard to think about.

Does anyone here have any cotton patch geese? I am looking for 3 or 4.

Welsummers
Hello fellow Minnesotans...
Newbie here just getting started this spring. Been wanting to do this for a while but this is finally the right year to get started. I have a feeling I'll be spending a lot of time on this site. It's oddly addictive and it's really wonderful to see so many knowledgeable people willing to help out the clueless and overwhelmed.

After a lot of research I've decided on 5 or 6 Welsummers...but temperment is a big deal for me and so based on what I've read I want to get them from a breeder. Of course I am running into the 25 chick min. order for having them shipped, so right now I am in search of 1 of 2 things. Someone in MN who can sell me a few Welsummer chicks, or someone who wants to split the order with me. I'm looking at Whitmore Farm. Anyone interested PM me.
