Minnesota!

Posting That made me remember that I left the light switch on in one coop. Had to make an undies run in the rain to shut it off! Would hate to screw up their lay cycle by leaving on all night

Don't you know you can put those birds into shock when you make those "undies" runs! LMBO!!!

Even if you are pumping, I wouldn't rely on that alone to keep it from freezing unless you have some heat in it too for those coldest days and nights. My coop is 10-15 degrees warmer than outside, but that still means when it is -20, it is -10 inside. Even wrapping in poly might not keep it warm enough? I would make sure I had a back-up plan just in case.

I use large heated dog bowls, but they have to be cleaned daily which is a pain in the butt. I am going to try some nipple waterers with a 2.5 gallon bucket inside a 5 gallon bucket, wrapped in heat tape and insulated in between. We shall see how that holds up. I will still have something underneath to catch if there any leaks or drips. I may try a second method using a 3" PVC pipe wrapped with heat tape and insulation too. No way to test different ways until the cold hits, so I need to prep those on these rainy days.
Love experiments, can't wait to hear what you find.
Ducks can see way better than chickens. What you say makes sense, but I have gone out several times and they are all on the roosts 2-3 hours before the lights are out. They find their way on the roost though, in my experience, but I have low roosts too.

I know ducks can see because I have gone out after it is plenty dark and they see me and started quacking and are running to the gate. You can sneak up on a chicken in the dark easily, but ducks run away.
That makes sense, I hear the wild ducks on the pond out there quaking when something up sets them, even in the middle of the night, even saw some flying after dark the other day.

Did you go out in your b-day suit like some people on here might according to previous posts? (no names given to protect the guilty) Wouldn't want your undies to get wet in that rain! lololol

hahaha! They could fall of the roosts and not find their way back on in the dark, Lolol Oh wait, if there was a full moon they could see ok.

Good morning!

Well, I am pretty sure it has been raining for the last 12-hours. The strawberries and garlic ought to be thoroughly watered. I am hoping it clears up enough to get straw on both. It has been on the list of things to get done for the last two weeks. However, the list is long, so it isn't done yet.
I did manage to do some pen cleaning yesterday once it started spitting. That was a good thing, but still several to clean inside and out so I am ready for when the big chill arrives. Not my favorite part of the winter prep.
One thing that won't be easier now that has rained is digging what is left of the potatoes. They were easy last week when we harvested one row, but I don't think the rest will be as easy. Sometimes I want to push a big button to stop everything else so I can get some of this caught up, but we all know that one doesn't exist. The upside, I am never bored and haven't been for years.

Y'all have a lovely day, I am going to go enjoy a nice cup of my foo-foo Highlander Grog.

Good morning! I am also in denial about it being ready to snow! I'm not ready! Not yet at least! My hay still needs to get mowed!! Not sure is that is going to happen or not?? My renter just took the last of his corn so if it dries up at all maybe
