Misconceptions

Bigger Misconception: Brown eggs are rooster eggs

Or my favorite: Fertilized eggs are poisonous, this coming from the same person that told me that you will not get eggs without a rooster,

My favorite so far was when I gave a dozen of beautiful mixed colored eggs to a 75 yr. old man, that I work for in the office, also he breeds horse and taught FFA in school, so he is very "country". He even was telling me how to capinize (sp) a roo. He took them home and showed them to his wife and grandsons, and the all hovered around when she broke open the green egg, they thought the yolk would be green as well. Even my boss!

I do NOT like green eggs and ham!
I do not like them Sam-I-Am.

How about chickens are filthy animals?
I admit, I believed this one. But this new flock, I pet them and hold them.. and was actually surprised that they are clean and soft.
They dont smell anywhere as bad as my dog.. and they dont eat poop.

I have a friend who insists that, in the winter, I should take all of my chickens (from two coops), and throw them all in together in one coop. Cramming them all in together will be good for them, he says, cause they'll keep each other warm.

Uh, sure, the roosters will keep each other warm as they fight all day long.

He also insists that I should throw away all of my pointy ended eggs - or is it the round ended ones? Because those are the roosters. If I do that, I'll hatch out only hens.

People think I'm nuts.

Most common response I get when they hear I've got 4 chickens... "Thought you couldn't have more than 3 in Seattle". I live in Tacoma.

Seattlites think that the world ends at the airport south of the city... the airport called SeaTac (Seattle-Tacoma).

The rooster thing is a common belief, too.

I also get asked if I'll eat them.

"If they look different, they taste different"
I made egg salad sandwiches from Araucana eggs. My sister wouldn't touch them because the shells were green!
