5 months old and full grown! My Barred Rock/Easter Egger. Her cheek feathers are popping out, but you can't see it in this photo. She's not much bigger then my D'Uccle.;)

To the other poster, I'm very sorry about Melvin, I used to have a rooster named Melvin too.

Sorry to but in. I have two cream legbars and have just hatched 5 white leghorns. I know I will prob end up with at least one leghorn roo. What I would like to know is will the chicks hatched between the leghorn roo and legbar hen would they still lay a blue egg or will it then become a white egg? Who carries the shell gene? Sorry still a novice here!

There are genes for brown eggs

a gene for blue eggs (The blue egg gene and the white egg gene are actually alleles for those that understand)

a gene for white eggs.

eggs are either white or blue because of the genetics involved.

Chickens that lay:

white eggs have two genes for white egg ( no blue egg gene) and no brown egg genes.

brown eggs have 2 genes for white egg shell plus genes for brown egg shell.

blue eggs have one blue egg gene( plus a white egg gene) or two blue egg genes ( no genes for white egg) and no brown egg genes.

green eggs have one or two blue egg genes ( no genes for white egg) and brown egg genes.

Pink eggs are just a tinted brown egg. There are no pink egg genes.

So I am down to 3 hens, 3 young chickens and 4 chicks. But my neighboor found the problem. A young, unafraid coyote has been seen in my yard many times. Needless to say it wont be getting any more. I have lost almost 30 chickens in the past year to this thing. He would strike in the day taking 1-3 birds a time.

I'm so sorry. What an awful way to loose your birds. I hope he can be removed some way....

Well that coyote must not be alone. Went to shut the up and 3 were gone. One reappeared on the porch at about 2:30 am and another at 9. What ever got one must have scared the others into the trees or something. I went in to the thicket next to my coop and there is a maze of dog size paths throughout it. I am guessing a small pack of coyotes. The wild rabbits are gone too. I use to see 3 a night until last month.

TheifPouter: That is why I keep mine cooped at all times, but I am in the process of making a portable run for them to get around in the yard-but will always be secured. I know if we lost one of our chickens my daughter would be crushed! I really hope you have better luck with your birds.

Yeah but I just dont enjoy cooped up chickens. They fight (more than normal), they turn a lot into mud, and there is alot more to clean up. I guess it just not meant to be.
