MJ's little flock

It must be my lucky day!

It's Ivy's first egg of the season. That means she's given up using the little coop as a nest and instead is following her friends into the laundry basket nest.

I'm not much surprised because that laundry basket is deep, screened, dry and it has a view of the back fence. It must feel very safe.
I love your laundry basket nest. It’s so picturesque. ❤️

I've found lots of things to repurpose for the hens. Yesterday it was a short piece of kiln dried timber, very smooth, sent with a ceiling mounted clothes airer for the laundry. I thought hmm pullets might like to roost on that one day and added it to the "chickens might like it" jumk pile.

It was a strange day for the hens.

This morning the rain was falling in a very constant, settled in way. On my third attempt at letting the hens out of their big coop and into the funrun, Janet mustered the determination to cross the threshold then she turned around and went back in! All four were very peaceful in the big coop and reluctant to get wet. I had to go to work today, so I left them in there for the first time ever.

I've just got home with a feeling of trepidation about how much pecking poor Ivy must've put up with, only to find them keen but not anxious to get out. No one is injured, no one is stressed, everyone is enjoying the usual playtime in the garden. It's like they bonded or something.

The big coop is actually quite big for four hens (3.7m2), although smaller than ideal. On the other hand, there are 5 perches, a platform and 2 tree stumps, all of which provide a few emergency escape routes for anyone being picked on.

I haven't found any eggs. Maybe an egg or two has been buried under the sawdust, maybe no eggs were laid.

Also, I'd left the pop door open on the funrun and caught a full sized magpie! It had no trouble flying out once I'd opened the human doors.

I feel sorry for the hens because it's almost time for them to have dinner and go back in their big coop for the night
