MJ's little flock

Not really, no.

There's a bulletin board used by some people in the local chickening community when they want to sell stock. In the past I didn't have much luck calling breeders in the poultry association, but I could try that again. The breeder who's not responding to me is not in the poultry association, she breeds for the backyard market. Then there's gumtree, some people list chickens for sale on gumtree. One or two of the fodder stores source and sell pullets that don't come from commercial hatcheries, so I could try them. I won't support commercial hatcheries because they trim the chicks' beaks and they selectively breed for egg production.

I may end up taking a long drive to get pullets from interstate.

I'm still keen on smaller standard pullets. When I've built the big henhouse I'll get some larger hens.

So, I've been making lots of phone calls and have identified the one fodder store selling heritage breeds to backyard chickeners. Sandersons Fodder in Coromandel Valley.

I'm writing the post as a note to myself so I don't forget.

They've got some heritage breed pullets arriving on Saturday and I'm passing by Coromandel Valley on my way to my aunty's bbq on Sunday afternoon, so I'll pop in and introduce myself.
