MJ's little flock

Hmmm I wonder if your knowledge on suicide rate in Sweden might be out of date. Wikipedia says it's below the oecd average but it used to be high.
Yes, very probably. It is impossible to keep up to date with all the stray bits of information that come my way. Good to know it's come down.

I think the USA leads the world in suicides currently.
According to my nephew there are 3 main factors that are causing problems for the Swedes and some other Northern European nations.
The lack of sunlight is one.
The housing model is another.
The higher prevalence of atheism is another.
Not much to be done about the sunlight. The housing model where it is very common to have the younger generation living on their own can be adjusted.
The realization that humans do not have a higher purpose in life and that we are just another species on an insignificant planet is a problem more and more people are going to struggle with assuming the species survives.

The Swedes trust their politicians broadly speaking and they get a more competent selection.
Are their politicians more trustworthy? I couldn't even name one so have no idea of their competency but tend to be of the mindset that: it doesn't matter who you vote for, a politician always gets in.

I think it's important to separate trustworthiness and competence. The Swedes I have spoken to will shrug and say corruption comes with any sort of power. But, they also say that in general, ignoring ideological divides, the politicians take the job seriously and get competent looking results.

To be achingly and somewhat fastidiously fair, I think it's hard to be seen as trustworthy when you're a politician. You get elected on Platform A, great! Now try to implement any of it. What's wrong? Can't do it? Opposition won't vote for your initiatives? Next thing you know, your voters have lost trust in you.

That said there are some appalling exhibits in power around the world at present, gut-churningly appalling. Some good 'uns too.

Might as well use their handiwork, the little excavators.
They really are. I happened to look under the overhang of the Chicken Palace yesterday and was worried that the defenses had been breached because there was so much earth movement. I figured some big digging predator had somehow got through all the wire. But no, it is my dainty(?) Princesses. I will try and get a picture this weekend as I want to rake out the rocks and add some sand and wood ash and maybe some lavender leaves to the area for them.
