I don't know yet. I haven't seen the rooster, only heard him. I'm assuming they keep hens as well because otherwise they'd have a very sad gent on their hands. I'm not very fussed about breeds, but today's heat, Mary's struggle and your comments on banties has got me reconsidering my options.What sort of a mix will your neighbour provide? I am assuming they have barnyard mixes...?

Egg laying isn't one of them though.
When I had Australorps I found they didn't do so great in the heat either ~ & they too were on the larger size. The Campines & bantams are likely to still be foraging long after the larger girls have found somewhere cool to rest. I'm not sure Campines would go with your established flock but Wyandotte bantams might. They're not too bad in the egg laying department & while larger than Japs or D'Uccles also seem to handle the heat better despite rose combs.
