Monster coyote track

I got 3 GSDs--they are good deterrants for raccoons, oppossuns, skunks, etc. I would never put them up against coyotes. Right now it's mating season and food is scarce. They are meaner and hungry. As big as my dogs are they are supervised when outside. I try to go ecerything possible to make sure all animals are protected.

Coyotes are good for sending one in, dog chases and the rest of the pack are waiting to make the kill. A large dog is a meal for them.

GSD? German Shepard dogs? If they can’t take out a coyote then I don’t know what kind of breeding you’re getting, but it’s very poor! My uncle keeps two German shepherds outside full time in Dawson Creek Northern B.C. Canada For Grizzlies and Cougars. -20 to -30 Celsius during winter.

They have taken down one cougar and run off several bears, they are pretty much completely untrained just very territorial. They will be 2 this year (both females, littermates that would have been culled due to non-desirable color in their coats)

I think it’s more likely there’s a wolf problem you’re looking at, not coyotes! With the size of the print from the OP I wouldn’t discount a cross breed or possibly a wolf, they are actually smaller than most people think!

Just an update. I didn't have the coyote on the camera, just a fox and a possum. I've talked to a few hunters and they both said it was probably a coydog, and it is now coyote mating season and it could have just been passing through tracking a female. I pulled the camera for now as temps are back down in the teens and single digits (I don't want to damage my rechargeable batteries), but when temps rebound I will put it out again.

We are fortunate with the dogs out at night worse we have had is a deer
waiting till the frost is gone to start planting

The most recent local dog related coyote Attack was 2-3 coyotes up against 2 pit bulls and a smaller dog. It appears the put Bulls were protecting the smaller dog. One pit bull was mauled to death, second pit bull serioudly injured and the small dog has a couple bite/scratches on head areas the pit bull definitely died for the smaller dog.
Somebody personally witnessed this event? Only 2-3 coyotes against two Pitbulls and Pitbull was mauled to death? I don't believe that. I've seen my Anatolian run at a pack of coyotes and scatter them like roaches. A single Anatolian can easily kill a coyote with a bite so the coyotes run. I've seen my Anatolian fight a Pitbull, and he just managed to run it off.

I'm thinking this is the monster. Definitely looks like the one I saw (color and body mass). I set out the camera to look for fox so I didn't put out anything for size comparison, but I did catch the neighbor's big dog on the camera in the same area and included those to help with an idea of size. I'n not sure what kind of dog Hank is, but he's big (and harmless).

And this is what Hank thinks of my camera:

Hank looks like he has some mastiff heritage to me (which is another of my favorite misunderstood breeds!) and he’s probably checking out the coyote scent by the looks of it. This is one situation where your neighbors dog pooping in your yard isn’t such a bad thing... it might deter that coyote some! It has basically the right profile and muzzle look to me, but also seems really tall and a bit deeper through the chest than the ones I used to get. Very different area though, as mine were Canadian city coyotes ;) , our ‘coons were huge but our coyotes smaller than your average border collie. Hopefully Hanks visit/marking gives it some pause! Thanks for the update.

Nothing last night on the cameras. Once in awhile that happens but most nights I get some predator on one of the cameras. I haven't converted some of the most recent videos to pictures yet. Here is one of the coyotes I see quite often and someones Great Pyrenees dogs.
