Ok, guys, you can see the pic of my nasty "hen"? Could she be a he? How can I tell. I came from So Cal, it's hard to tell with people, male or female!! She laid a two inch gash in my husbands arm yesterday. He got so mad he stuck her out in the north 40. Of course she made her way back. (he spent hours looking for her to make sure she made it home, sissy) Got our first egg today. Looked like one should be in a nest in a tree. Tiny. figure it came from one of our two Rhode Isl Reds. If she ends up being a HE, what would a rooster do? Chickenchick?? Beekissed any help? Looking for a 4H club here in town or close. Maybe we will find a place for he/she yet. Also going to try to set up a vacation Bible school. Maybe year round. Any help or suggestions accepted. Oh God help me. Beekissed, pack your bags we need you.

I will probably need to stick where I am until the youngest gets out of school (2 yrs.) and then I am a free woman!!!

Pretty flat in your area then? You live on the west or east side of the Rockies? Plenty of water for range there? Got a Walmart?

Your hen DOES sound mean! Mine aren't tame little pets either, so don't feel alone. I don't pick them up unless necessary....I guess I'll probably spoil the new chicks more because they will be so cute and fuzzy!

I would dearly LOVE to live near like-minded folks like y'all! How fun to get together and discuss homesteading options, chickens, gardens, etc.

Good morning beekissed. 2 years, that isn't bad. We will still be waiting for you! Mine has 5 years of school left so we arn't going anywhere. Not that we would anyway. We live on some lad that has been in the family for over 100 years. There is enough that the closest neibors will never be closer than 3 miles. You can't see or hear them! Although their ctas and dogs find us once and a while. Start looking now and you could have the place of your dreams all lined up for when you are able to move.

vickiemontana Good morning to you to! Keep postin pics for her and you might just talk her into it! My hubby is half afraid of "those birds". Him and my son tease them that they could be chicken nuggets! They swear that the girls only like me. Hey! Whats not to like.

Congrats on your first egg! How eggciting!

Mine are still pretty tiny too. However I got my second egg from one of my EEs. Its is a jumbo size(based on a store egg comparison)! It is such a pretty green I don't know if I can bring myself to eat it. Might just have to save that one too!

I feel that way about some of our eggs also! Your place sounds like a dream! How nice to have that solitude! I was raised on a place like that and now I live smack dab on the highway... un The folks around here DO NOT respect one's privacy! I long for more lonely, more rural, more quiet. I have been looking at real estate sites online for Montana. My reality is that I may have to rent awhile until I find a place for us. Any lonely farmhouses out there, just dying for a good renter to fix it up and make it cute?

You know that does happen. The farmer and his wife move to town and lease out the land to a neiboring farmer. The house usually just sits. Ther are a few empty ones within a few miles from us. There was a beautiful old farm house on our land. Unfortunatly I have only seen pictures.

My hubby moved back here from Alaska and wanted something to move into right away. He was single and didn't see the need for such a big house. Also he was young and decided remodeling may cut in to some beer drinking time!! So they burned it down and brought ina brand new trailer house. I could just kick him. Its one of those subject if accidentley brought up gets dropped in a quick hurry!

I always wanted an old farm house to restore. Oh well! You know it really is like a dream for me. I grew up in the city and always wanted this. I had cousins that grew up on a farm and hated it. They were my favorite cousins to visit. Not because of them but because they had chickens, horses, pigs cows..... and lots of trees and space! I love it here at night. All you can hear is crickets, maybe an owl and sometimes a coyote. We live in the middle of an oil field so sometimes we hear a squeaky pump! My hubby has gone out a 4am to grease one so we could sleep!

Hey Montana girls, I'm in Helena, not far from you folks. Was raised in Kalispell so I miss the greens of the Flathead. One thing I found this past winter that helped my coop, I stacked straw bales around the outside and the inside of the coop walls. Provided great insulation, then in the spring, move the bales off to help with the heat of summer. Montana is a nice place to live but it is isolated. We have no TV and no internet. All members of your family will have to deal with the isolation, not just the mom or dad. But I have to say, eating fresh huckleberrys makes up for any losses!!

We don't have cable and only have dial-up right now. We only watch movies on our VCR/DVD player anyway, no regular TV. The older I get, the more I want the isolation. My boys are used to it also and like it as well as I do. I like to sit on the front porch swing and talk of an evening....that is what we call a fun night out! Or we light a fire in the yard, spread a blanket and watch for shooting stars. I bet one could see more stars out in the Big Sky country! If you hadn't guessed, we aren't like most folks. I was raised without electricity or running water, in a two room log cabin. Montana will be a breeze!

Hi there highmountianchick. I like your straw bale idea. Smart thinking! My parents had a cabin in Coram, by West Glacier while I was a kid. I spent alot of time in that area growing up. I miss it too.

Beekissed, You would fit in so well with our family! Thats a night "out" for us to. My son is really happy when we tell him supper is roast your own weiners!

(In the fire pit in the front yard!) Thats because there must be smores for dessert! I agree with the age thing. I would much rather leave the hustle and bustle behind. I am a stay at home Mom. I minimize my trips to town as much as possible. I could go weeks if my family would let me, but darn it if they don't need something from time to time! So I usually go once a week. I take all day, run errands, go to lunch, visit with my friends. Thats good for me. I think I bond with my family more without all the distractions anyway. We play games, sit outside and just talk. Oh and the stars are beautiful here! You could just come for a visit!

I would dearly LOVE to...maybe when the #2 son gets out of his tech training for the guards and goes to CO, we can swing by and say howdy!

Funny about what you said about staying home. There was a point where I was doing schooling online and wasn't working much, that my boy says to me, "Mom, do you realize that, except for church and the occasional work day, you haven't been to town for about 2 months?" I looked at him and smiled and slowly said, "I KNOW....isn't it great!"

Being a single mom and, sometimes working 2-3 jobs at a time, my life has been spent on the road. I have often driven home and didn't remember the actual drive. I have been working since I was 14 years old, most of that has been directly with the public....frankly, I'm sick of most humans! I like OUR kind, though! Normal, nonmaterialistic, got our priorities straight folks who know what real happiness feels like.....now that, I can't get enough of!

Its exciting to talk to REAL people! I live out in the boonies (not far enough) but these folks aren't what I consider "real country". They look at us like we have a third eye if we sit on our front porch of an evening.....we NEVER see anyone doing that around here! I expect they are watching the boob tube.
