Most people clear cut their land and big empty fields are death for chickens. Red Junglefowl are primarily forest dwelling animals
I had a hawk try to attack my barred rock in the woods…thankfully she was smart enough to hide in a thorn bush and stay still even though he was sitting on a branch right above her. But yes, fields are definitely more dangerous!

It's dogs for me. Have never had any predators from any other animals where I live, and the way their run is built, predator birds can't get in or out by swooping down on them so they don't even try. The top is open to the sky, not enclosed by fencing, so the predators 'could' come in that way, but with over 10 years of having a flock, I haven't ever seen any evidence, nor lost any of my flock in this way. Never seen any evidence of any other predators, because there is too much human activity around my yard... neighborhood bar is just across the alley and up a couple of doors, we can see the patrons on the backdoor patio from our back door. But neighborhood dogs have torn my runs up, getting into kill and steal my birds, even though we have a leash law in our township that is 'supposed' to keep dogs from running loose, but it's not enforced.

For my area coyotes are #1 and part of the insidiousness is that they can just jump any normal fence. Height is not a barrier to them and they do roam at night and during the day (this is a sort of surburban context).

We do have hawks but I think what @Red Mangrove said about clearing land vs having things they can hide in is why I have not yet had hawk trouble. Plenty of bushes and I have a number of dwarf fruit trees that the birds hang out under during the day.

My working theory is that having bushes and plants that obscure my perimeter also makes it harder for daytime coyotes to look in and see something they want.

My vote, according to experience here in the country, has been raccoons and hawks. But beware, we just lost one of our girls to a FROG. Yep. At first I suspected a snake bite, as we have rattlers, cottonmouths, copperhead. But remembering that she was playing with the frog in her mouth, and the frog's legs were limp, I believe she died of the poison frogs secrete when they are attacked. She died about 24 hours after playing with/eating the frog.

In my area it is DOGS! People drop them off thinking a farm will be a good place for their dog to live. I have 38 Speckled Sussex and they free range. I also have 22 Mammoth Jackstock Donkeys. Where ever the donkeys go the Chickens always stay with them. The Donkeys take care of Dogs quickly.
