Mushroom foragers

Pics
I had planned on getting some oyster and shiitake plugs last yr, saved out some fresh oak logs but never got around to it. Had someone near me say red squirrels ate all theirs. Never gave a thought to critters eating them.
I "planted" blue oyster and hen of the woods plugs in standing dead elms last spring. So far I have not seen any development. Two of those elms produced oyster mushrooms on their own last spring and into the summer (they were delicious) but once everything dried up and it got hot those stopped growing. I had hoped the recent rains and cooler temperatures would bring them back but it hasn't.

Hopefully there will be oysters and hens to harvest next spring.

I only find hen on oak . I tried plugs but only got results using past prime hen to seed stumps . If you can get some gifted to you there is your best chance to seed stumps .

I'm planning an outdoor mushroom grow this year.. thought I would start some brown rice flour cakes with oyster mushrooms spores then once those are spawned I would spread it into some pasteurized manure then once that was colonized I would pasteurize more bulk substrate and mix it all up and dump it outside in my woods on some cardboard// fingers crossed

Please update us how it goes!

Following. Thanks R2elk for sharing the link. My dh loves mushrooms.
I do not eat them but I would like to learn more about them and try to grow some
for dh.

Nice thread Ralph. I look forward to learning more about mushroom growing.

Time to dust this thread off-----Before you know it the Morel reports will begin.

Another 6 weeks or so and I should have black morels up here and in 2 months the yellows.

I am impatient for them again.
No sign of anything here at this time. Of course the ground is still frozen and there are still plenty of snow and ice patches around.

I was actually thinking about plugging a recently felled tree stump. Any thoughts? @duluthralphie or others???
Depends on the species of tree . I will say I had limited success . I now prefer to seed stumps with mushrooms I find . I started hen of the woods that way . Some trees are better hosts . Chicken of the woods grows on many species but really love honey locust stumps . They will repeat on those for 20 years or until the stump is gone .
