My 1 year old hen can’t walk!

She was found nestled on floor of the coop and cannot walk. No sign of mites, no foot sores, no poopy butt, she can eat & drink but cannot walk. Any ideas?

Welcome to BYC. What happens if you lift her to her feet? Does she move her legs when touched? Is one leg weaker than the other? Could she have been injured by a rooster or in a fall? Was she vaccinated for Mareks disease? Does she normally lay eggs? Could she have been kept from food and water?

She can use her legs, but soon wobbles to the ground. I hand fed her and she stood up and pooped a huge stinky mess. I bought her 2 days old from a store so I have no idea about her vaccinations. She eventually flew up to her perch by nightfall. Another sickly looking young hen died yesterday. I will monitor the situation today. She appears to be gently walking and eating.

How old is she and the one who died? Your state vet may be able to perform a necropsy on the one that died to give you a diagnosis. Here is a list of state vets:

The hen that died was two years old max. They are rescues from a property with a bobcat. Now I have a bobcat also that is stealing hens biweekly. Tough times for my flock!
