God almighty! If my chickens had an unlimited food supply they would eat until they explode! When I feed them heavy for the weekend, say for a short stay away from home, they gorge and lay on their sides being unable to move!

You are right, my feeder was definitely too small. I just ordered a 30 lb galvanized feeder and I think that should last quite a while for my 12 hens. thanks!

If yours are "gorging" it's because they are too hungry

Laying on their sides is what they do when full and relaxing

You can't feed birds extra one day, then skip a couple of days.
That can work with some animals, but it's not good for birds
Their metabolisms are too fast to store energy for very long and need to eat often
