Hi there all you people of BYC!
I’m Anna, I’m 23 years old, married with three little kids and we live in BC, Canada 🇨🇦. let me tell you a little bit about me and my backyard chickens ! 🐓

My first memory of chickens is my mom running outside to chase off hawks from her golden sebright bantams. Or her telling me to go collect the tiny eggs from the coop, the grass cool on my bare feet, wet with the morning dew, and the morning sun warming my back. They were such cool little birds but unfortunately her flock slowly got picked off one by one.

In my teenage years , I worked on a dairy farm where the chickens free ranged and often came pecking and scratching in front of the milking parlour. My employers wife would often come into the parlour with a chicken tucked under her arm, offering it out to me to hold/ pet. She, like my mom , also had a bantam golden sebright. She was the most petite little thing and her name was Sweet Pea. Here she is interrupting my work 🥰 4D4967D5-7C04-4BDA-9A6B-210DF17EE208.jpeg
Here is another picture of me(on the left) and a coworker, holding some of the chickens at the dairy farm. We often took “breaks” to catch a chicken cuddle.

I also had pilgrim geese and Cayuga ducks for a short time as a teenager, until my dad decided they were too messy. We also had rabbits, guinea pigs and Pygmy goats

My first flock as an adult consisted of bantam birchen Cochins, speckled Sussex and Houdans. I like all those breeds so much. Hopefully some day again. We unfortunately had to move and I had to get rid of my birds.

Now we are at a place where we are permitted to have backyard chickens and I have a beautiful mixed flock of 12 birds. We have a few mixed birds or “mutts” and also a polish, a crested cream legbar, two light Brahmas, and five salmon Faverolles.
I will tell you a bit about each of them in the following posts.
Here is me, now at 23, with my beautiful Salmon Faverolle rooster , Jean-Claude.

Jean-Claude

This is Jean-Claude, my Salmon Faverolle rooster .

I got him as a chick in early June 2020.

He’s very chill and has never been aggressive in the least . My kids can pick him up.

In the last few weeks he has really matured and has started with his manly duties, much to the hens chagrin. I haven’t seen him get familiar with the mature hens yet or the young pullets, although he likes to scuff his feathers against the ground beside them and try to impress with his little hop-skip-scuffle. They pay him no mind. Perhaps one day, Jean-Claude, the confidence will find you. 😆 Maybe if you weren’t so cocky with your frequent crowing they would be more cordial with you. All hours of the night, Jean-Claude, is a bit much... the ladies need thier beauty sleep, you know.

All in all, we really appreciate Jean-Claude, he is a gentleman and a guardian.

@dirtydunlops - Thanks for introducing us to yourself and your flock! Can't wait to see more photos and hear their bios. Being married with little ones, does your partner and/or the children like being with the chickens alot? You very well may be raising future chicken keepers yourself, as your mom's flock provided first memories for you! My grandmother and aunt had a large flock, and it was what got me interested in raising chickens as an adult myself. Do you have plans or dreams of taking your flock and evolving it into something you can mold a business around? (Breeding, showing, eggs, meat, crafts, etc?) Can't wait to hear more!

So cool! My partner was a city kid but the country life is really growing on him. He wanted me to get production layers but I told him they don’t spark joy as much as the other breeds . Now hes starting to understand there’s more to chickens then just egg laying capabilities and has even requested that we get more polish chickens. My kids absolutely love the chickens . They are very involved in the daily feeding of treats or chicken scraps .

I absolutely intend to one day make a business of it ,or at least a paying hobby. My goal for the summer is to breed my salmon Faverolles and sell the chicks or the hatching eggs if all goes well. I also want to start up some chicken apparel for chicken lovers. One day we will hopefully have our own little farm where we can raise many different breeds.

Marigold Marge

Marigold Marge is one of the original barnyard mix chicks from the eggs we incubated early 2020. Most of her “chick mates” got eaten off by hawks and coyotes when they started free ranging. But Marge and her sister Blackberry Betsy survived and now they are safe in an enclosed run with all the others. They still are the most eager to free range. Marigold Marge is the tamest, as she was the first of the eggs to hatch, she was handled the most by my kids. She is still one of my son’s favourites. She’s my most frequent layer. Every day a lovely pale blue egg.

Blackberry Betsy

Blackberry Betsy is a lovely brown hen. She lays a very light brown egg. Sister to Marge, so you’ll often find them out foraging together. She’s pretty calm and sweet and absolutely looooves blackberries. She’s looking pretty scraggly since she has had her first molt but she’s resumed laying so I’m hoping her feathers will return to their former fullness and lustre .
