Now I'm sorry but that post about showing only what you breed not what you buy is hocky. It's not like she was going to say yes I created this bloodline she wants to show a bird. It doesn't matter who bred it. So long as she's not showing it and then when people ask her where she got it she's telling them she bred it. If she says oh I bought it from so and so wouldnt that be benifical to breeders? Wouldn't that draw in new customers for the breeder to have someone else out there showing their lines too? I know alot of people in the horse world and how many people in each class do you think even OWN the horse more or less bred it? People who buy birds to show are feeding it vetting it and caring for it it's their chicken to show should they choose too.

in our county you have to own the birds 3 months before the show. but it is done on the honor system, and not everyone is honorable

I had some one call me two weeks before the fair and want to "rent" a bird for their child to show. I declined. everybody has to start somewhere. Do you have an incubator ? you could get some eggs going now and have some nice birds by the fair. plus the kids can take pics of development for a 4-h project

Well it's like this you do what you want. Some people tend to forget we do this for fun and I personally think its your chickens so do what you enjoy. Everybody got their birds from somebody so it's no big deal to show birds you bought. There are so called "TOP BREEDERS" out there that buy birds and show them though some may not admit it. So show what you want , enjoy it , learn from it and most of all make it fun for you and the kids.

No matter whether they bred or bought the birds, it's the experience of showing that will be great for the kids. There's a lot more to showing a bird than just sticking it in a cage and hoping the judge likes it. Training the bird to be handled by others, getting the bird used to be sitting in a small cage all day, all the conditioning and prep (washing and grooming, etc) that goes in to getting the bird ready - it will be a great learning experience for them.

This was my son Quins' first year showing. He showed in the youth class along with the 4h kids. We made no secret to the fact that we hatched eggs purchased from someone else (Thank You PeepsInc). I like talking to all the kids because they love to tell you about their birds. I learned things about showing from many of them. I also learned that many of them got eggs and/or birds from someone else, that they were showing.

We were really lucky to have a judge that would answer any question you could think of. This does make the judging take a lot longer but is so beneficial to learning.
When people asked Quin if his birds were for sale, he told them no they were his pets. They were told where they could find birds/eggs like them, BYC.
We now have a better Idea what to look for when breeding for next year. Everyone has to learn someway. Even the top breeders buy the best birds or eggs from the best birds they can find to add to their flock. Good luck, Teresa.

I just had to add, when the judging was over, I asked the judge what we could do to improve on Stormy as a breed. She told us the only thing was, she could gain a little more weight. This tickled me because, wellll .... That definitely isn't my problem. Who wouldn't want to hear they need to gain weight.

If you want to keep the birds, why don't you get a really good roo and breed them? The chicks will be better than the hens, and they should be old enough to show next year. If you are going to the Ohio National, or you know someone who is, maybe you could arrange to get one from there? Make sure you see it first, though!

I didn't mean to come off as rude, I was only stating my opinion. Someone told me that once and I thought it was silly that you should breed your own birds first. For some reason it stuck though. It's fine if it's just 4H. Where I live it's rather different, 4H usually show at the big fair, so the standards are a bit different. I don't mean to sound like a crazy breeder person like I came off as, it's just I have different view than everyone else here. I'm a child as well, so I know it would be a good experience for the kids if they showed the birds. I just think building up to the process of showing your own raised and bred birds is exciting and a lot of work. Just don't mind me...​

I know what you mean about breeding vs. buying. Buying and showing is like an art contest where you purchase your art instead of making it yourself. The person who springs for the Kandinsky will usually win over the one who can only afford a late Klee..... It's more frustrating than unethical.

We do own the horse my 12 yr old DD shows but we also lease him out to a girl on the high school equestrian team.This July was our first 4-H fair also showing rabbits and next year will be the first showing poultry. I have not seen a Blue Banty Cochin befor, the kids and I talked and that is they decided to show. My dd also has a silkie she plans to show as well as some GLW.My son really wanted a cochin frizzle and i hope to find him one in the spring. The kids will feed, clean up after and bathe/blowdry their own birds.They will learn everything they can about them and MAYBE some day I will be brave enough to try and hatch some.At this point I know nothing about breeding or hatching eggs.I'm still learning about chickens and was just suprised to learn my were not what we thought they were. I will still let the kids show them,weather they do well or not really isnt as important as the fact that they are proud of the birds, proud of themselves and just happy to be there. I just didnt want to be showing up with birds I didnt hatch if that was a rule or something. We went to a rabbit show and let them pick out the ones they liked so I kinda thought it was the same way with poultry.. Oh and I placed an order for the book Standard of Perfection APA.. so now I will know what Im looking for ..
