My beautiful Joseph just died in my arms and it was my fault.

He was in the shed with one of his girls, I tried to gently shoo him out, but he ran behind the tack box, so I picked him up and took him through to coop door, as I entered the coop he wiggled and I dropped him, from waist height onto soft bedding, but he hit the ground and immediately was on his side and barely moved.

I picked him up and took him outside in my arms, his head flopped over and he was gone.

He was so beautiful, so gentle natured and now my salmon Faverole girls don't have their man.

What a fluke accident!!! You didn't do anything wrong - just keep telling yourself that! I'm so sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry, it was a freak accident, he should not have normally died from a fall that short. I love my SF's, especially my roos, they are so sweet...... hope you find your girls another bo when your heart heals........

Wow pretty freaky thing, that should not have presented a problem at all. No blame there. Was he old??? Chickens take far worse tumbles than that on a regular basis.

I'm so sorry, but there may have been something else wrong. We've had chickens tumble off the dog house, about 4' high and was fine. Don't beat yourself up.

Thanks everyone, you're all so sweet...he was only a year old, I'm wondering if he had a weak heart. It was not a big fall, and onto such soft bedding too..he went so fast I can't think of anything else that would make him die so fast, unless he landed funny and broke his neck?

I was already feeling a little delicate today as I took my first ever batch of meat birds to freezer camp this morning and it was harder than I thought it would be.
