My Chick won't be quiet. It's irritating the family!

My baby chick is always chirping, but it likes to go in my hair and chirp. I just cover it up with my hand and pet it softly and it will start to be quit.

Chicks make soft happy sounds when satisfied. If your chicks sound loud and unhappy then they are unhappy. Might be overcrowded. Might be too brite a light. I do not use heat lamp, but instead use a ceramic heat emitter fixture. Pet Smart carries them and even cheaper on eBay. First three or four days I leave a light on all the time so they can eat. After that they get thirteen to fourteen hours of light. As others said check for pastey butts. Are chicks gaining weight? I pick mine up every day to check butts so can tell how they are growing. I use several thermometers to check temp. My feed store has incubator/brooder thermometers for a couple bucks.

If they are THAT LOUD, something's wrong....Where & how are they being housed? How old and how many are there? You are using a heat light, what size blub? Are they eating/drinking? As others have asked, pasty butt?

Have you tried the mama heating pad idea? I found my chicks were so calm and peaceful with that. I had them in my bedroom for 2 weeks and had no issues whatsoever minus a slight "chicks in room" smell.

Comparatively, my friend uses a heat lamp and they chirp and chirp all day. I almost feel like they rest and are calmer with the heat pad since it is not a bright stimulating light on all the time. If it was only one chick, I would also say to check for blindness. We had one that was born and couldn't see for the first few weeks. Seems to see better or acts like it can now..but man was that thing a "homing beacon" when ever it wanted to walk around. The other chicks would chirp back to it and help guide it, but you could hear "Sammy" at the other end of the house when she felt lost or scared....very loud!

Also...how many chicks are we talking? My silkies and Sammy were so peaceful bc there were only 5...but my hatch with 35+ was quite a ruckus even though technically they were quietly chirping...35 chirps = one loud racket!

As others have said, something is wrong. Give them a larger area so they can get away from the heat source if it is too hot. Take a feather duster (real feathers) and suspend it in the opposite corner about 4 inches above the bottom so they can get under it. Chicks that are happy make little busy sounds and not loud crying. Something, somehow isn't right and they are telling you that they are very unhappy. Cuddling is not a fix, I agree. You need to find out why they are upset.
